Engine noise through inverter when playing in truck

Post by mightymike » Mon Sep 23, 2013 10:45 am

I'm looking for a solution to get rid of engine noise through my inverter.

As some here know I drive an 18 wheeler in the Lower 48, and into BC, Alberta, and Saskatoon, CA. I bought a little practice amp yesterday to play in the truck. It sucks, but it's better than nothing. My truck has regular 120v AC from an 1800 watt inverter that I plug my amp into. It gets uplayably noisy when I run the motor. So for now I run the AC for a little bit to cool the truck down, then turn off the motor and play until the truck gets too hot.

Suggestions?

Is there a noise filter I can put between amp and wall plug in truck?

Try it with the truck running using an external power source with an extension cord. If the noise persists, then it's induction and probably can't be helped. If the noise disappears, then you need some kind of isolation transformer, either for the power or the instrument input? :what:

See if you can find a small (attachable/detachable) portable solar panel like you'd find at Steve's Wholesale or Harbor Freight for an alternate power source. Most likely it's your larger semi truck's DC voltage battery source that's ramping up your noise (comparative to that of a 12 VDC car battery) and the filtering in your converter is not sufficient enough for that DC source. And I wholeheartedly agree with Chrisom about the "inductance" factor.

Have you tried a small cap between the live feed and ground (like the one you get inside an old car distributor that goes acroos the points)?
