I was going to purchase a Japanese DVD in NTSC Region 2 format, but realized it may not be compatible with my DVD player. My DVD "player" is a Playstation 2. Does anyone know where I could find the compatibility info for these or maybe someone knows what regions they play? The instruction manual doesn't say...thanks.

Since you're in the states I can pretty easily say that your PS2 is a region 1 dvd player. Do a search online to see if there is a way via code to mod it to a region 0 player. Pretty much most dvd players sold in the states are region 1 players. I know brands such as Quasar and Apex, as well as a few others you can input a certain code in through the remote to change it to region 0, which is region universal and can play dvd's from across the globe. I have done this with my Apex dvd player and have not had a problem with any dvd I have bought.
Not sure how this would react in a game console though. Might make it NOT work with games.

you need to chip your playstation, if you do that you can play games from the world and dvds my cousin did it to his and it worked.
CAUTION chipping you playstation 2 voids the warranty

They also have written code into some of the new games that looks for a modded console on boot and will not boot up.
