Who Played Guitar for Al Green?

Post by Sportsterguy » Sun Feb 26, 2006 1:48 pm

I know that most of the guys here are into heavier stuff. But, I'm listening to Al Green - Greatest Hits and damn this guy plays some of the most tasteful rhythm guitar that I ever heard.

Good man :) I dont think he used the same people for every album he's done but the really best early 70s stuff was Tennie Hodges. Since the late 70s he used different people. I think Hodges may be dead. Im not sure. Im positive he was the main creative force in those years.

Hey Billy,

I think that everything on this album is pre 1973. I'll have to check. This guy just kills. Everything just fits the song without being out-front and overbearing.

I'm partial to whoever the guy was that played on the original "Drift Away" by Dobie Gray, not that junk by Uncle Crapper (although he had enough class to have Dobie guest on his version). The R&B fills in that song are also just about perfect.

Its uncertain who played guitar on that song. Youd have to have the sleeve because 3 nashville guys played guitar on that album, Reggie Young, Troy Seals and Mentor Williams. I dont think Drift Away is on CD yet. I havent found it if it is. The song Drift Away is on CD compilations. Probably Mentor Williams since he wrote the song.

I heard that Al was a solid guitar player himself, too.

You know George, we really should have a "Music Appreciation" section on the board. I love to read about and discover new players from the perspective of other guitarplayers. There are so many amazing players out there, in so many different styles.
