I bought a couple LCD monitors...

Post by VelvetGeorge » Mon Feb 27, 2006 2:26 pm

The old 17" CRT I use for the shipping computer has been dying a slow death for a while now. And my two used ones on the main computer (dual screen) are completely mismatched. So I picked up a couple refurb 19" LCD's. That should be a nice improvement. And my first ever "new" monitor. Yeah.

The new ones have both analog and digital inputs. My question is, can I run longer cables with digital than analog? I assume so. Then I can finally get the computer over 6 feet from the monitors without ghosting?
That would be nice.

I'd love to mount it in a quiet rack enclosure. But it's a really deep server rack. I'll probably have my friend build a rack for it.

How about a dual head digital out video card? I have a Matrox dual head now that works great with audio programs.

Yes to all. Less interference, longer cable runs, steadier and sharper picture with digital.

And no interference from my studio monitors, right???

That will be nice.

And no hum when I'm making guitar clips.

Very nice.

Got my LCD montiors! AWESOME!

I have to use a VGA extender to plug one in and it does affect the picture quality.
I wonder if I used a VGA to DVI adapter, would that allow longer cables without signal loss?

Or do I just need to get the dual head, DVI out card?

I have a feeling it's the latter.

It´s the latter. Your monitors have to convert your analog output to digital the way you have them now. The DVI to VGA is just two plugs wired so the pinout fits.
Your monitors autodetects whether the signal is analog or digital.

The picture quality is higher too, because the signal stays digital, and there is no interference. So you have to get the digital card to see your new monitors in all their glory. And the longer cable runs is a bonus too.

I just set up two of these:

They are two(2!) 30´Apple Cinema Displays. They need a dual GPU each to drive them. We are going to use them for video editing.
(And my homemovies!)

Nice!

I will pick up a dual DVI card when I get some money saved again.
