New computer help please

Post by Necrovore » Sun Apr 09, 2006 1:36 am

I just put together my wife's new computer. The new system is running XP pro. Her old system runs win ME. Is there a way I can hook up the old hard drive to the new system in order to transfer files that she needs?

I believe I can set the old drive to autodetect in the CMOS and then be able to boot into win xp and then transfer the files needed one by one and the files will be changed from FAT32 to NTFS?

How to go about this?

Necrovore,

you just put the old drive inside your new computer - should recognize it as long as the old drive is configured to use any ID other than ID 0 - or in other words that you put the jumper on old drive that its set to slave.

set old drive to slave via jumper settings - hook it up in your new computer and when ya boot new machine your old drive would now be drive: D.

That may not work considering Me is in Fat32 and XP pro is NTFS
But I could be wrong

It should work fine, the HD on my computer--drive "C" is NTFS and I have a second that is external and its FAT32, they both work fine. I have had the external for years and its worked with several different computers running XP PRO. Give it a try, the worst that could happen is your new computer will blow up :D

Easiest way I've found is to use a USB "travel drive" and simply go in between the 2 computers until you get everything over you need. I bought a 1GB that is the size of a stick of gum for $40.

You're welcome. That worked out best for me anyway, and I still have the travel drive to use anytime I need it.

Yeah even though this is a permenant swap of files. to have to go in a zip the files and either upload them to our server, or burn them to disk has a tendency to make everything read only. the USB stick doesn't do that.
