What is the best way to package a 4x12 cabinet to ship? Also what is the best carrier to use for this? I am shipping from Texas to Ontario and would prefer something that wont cost a mint to ship this item

just take a large carboard box and cut it to fit right to the shape of the cab. Maybe put a little extra on the front.

You might want to see if Greyhound can ship something that large.

You could do the ole "stick in box" method, but if the shipping crew decides to drop it, the cardboard isn't gonna do much. Save your reputation and either go the UPS Store to help ya, or purchase some foam nuts. It's worth it man.

Well, I was going to use a packing method like what you get when you buy a stereo componant. The styrofoam on the corners, but was going to pack the hell out of the rest with foam peanuts.

You have to be carefull with packing peanuts, they settle in shipment and leave things unprotected.

Speaker cabs are tough to ship, by the time you really protect them they are over the girth limits of standard shipping rates.
Mojo ships me cabs in heavy duty cardboard boxes with corrugated corner protectors in side. This works pretty well, but it's not a perfect solution. I've had two cabs slightly damaged in shipment.

I would suggest wrapping the entire cab with at least two layers of heavy cardboard. Even more on the corners and edges.

UPS Store has the awesome liquid foam stuff that will mold around your speaker cabinet. I shipped 2 combo amps this way and it really impressed the shit out of the buyers.

Im starting to get to the point where Im about to blow this off. He's changed his mind on what exactly he wants (Im building this for him) and everytime we start talking shipping he balks a bit. He can actually pick up a new cabinet for close to what Im going to have to charge him. Seeing that I cant buy anything wholesale yet.

Take the cab to a dedicated shipping store and let them deal with it.

Shipped a new build last week by UPS to California and the amp was packed as well as one could pack, but the amp arrived damaged with the chassis bent and the faceplate torn. I've filed a claim with UPS but how long will it take to get resoleved, who knows! Seems there is no sure proof way to pack if the people in between are not doing their job correctly. I guess they figure it's not their package so why bother! Every time I ship something to my customers I'm on pins and needles till it gets there safely in one piece. Also, shipping cost now days is not cheap and some times the cost is a determining factor if you sell or don't sell, someone buys or don't buy, so one should get the service they pay for. Oh, and don't label as FRAGILE or your sure to have damage/s. When they see the FRAGILE they think its says 4th down and punt.

Man what an old thread. The deal never went through. Thank gosh as it would have been a logistical nightmare dealing with this guy.

I did find out one of the best ways to ship a cabinet though. Put the cabinet in a matching cabinet sized box using the same type padding that comes int eh box(talking a box from GC or whereever) Put the box in another using appropriate padding to protect the original box. Strap it to a pallet and use a trucking company. Their Dim weight/size costs are better than those of UPS/FEDEX/DHL and they actually care about what they are shipping. Yellow or Freeman are good. Actually Freeman are the best as they specialize in shipping high dollar(value) shipments.
