Dealing with SPAM

Everyday I remove several new users who have links to SPAM sites listed for email and website in their account.
Also, anytime I find an IP address logged into several sections of the forum at one time (sometimes over 100 at once) I block the IP.
Is there a more effective way to go about this? I already made signing up require entering a unique code, and you can only post as a member of the forum.
I have noticed that one particular IP keeps showing up: 66.249.*.***
examples that I have blocked:
66.249.72.130
66.249.72.74
66.249.65.4
66.249.66.173
66.249.62.81
What's that page where I can trace this IP? And how should I be dealing with the relentless SPAM from these addresses?
Thanks,
george

I dont think it was spam even though it was ... It was just someone who signed up and there first post was an advertisement .. Just my opinion maybe there should be a rule of some sort not allowing and advertisement of any sort until a certian amount of posts have been aquired if you dont you'll be removed permenatly.. I dont come here to advertise and I dont come here to read advertisements.. unless some is paying you for a banner or something.
so thats why I pointed out that post for the medical company or porn or what ever it was... Just my opinion... I like the metro forum just the way it is and you doo a great job of keeping the spam

out. so thanks George

I want to add something tfor anyone who reads. A few of you contacted me about the spam threads that were apparently here earlier. George mustve got it. Feel free to email me about it and Ill get it whever I check my email. That is the sole purpose for my mod-ship here and though Im busy these days I hate to make George have to always be the one to deal with that BS. I cant believe that that stuff actually works on anyone tho? It makes you think about the average human intelect doent it? It must work or they wouldnt waste their time and money.

All those adresses resolve to, for example: crawl-66-249-72-74-googlebot.com, using traceroute.

George, those robots are all over my site, too. That's how Google and other search engines update new topics flagged via the keyword seaches we do.
So, uh, yeah...you might wanna unblock those.

D'oh!
Cool, I unbanned them.
I guess what I should be doing, is when those SPAM'ers put in an email address trace it to their IP and ban that. Right?
