I like them for higher gain stuff it is true. I am not really a big HB fan after all being basically a Strat boy and a P-90 lover, so those are my basic tones.
I am fortunate, expense wise, to be out of this humbucker loop as there are so many choices out there.
Don't always take me seriously, I know EMG's aren't the ultimate pickup really, the guitars I have them in, came with them, so I like them in my heavier Les Pauls/Heritages, you guys argue some great choices, I liked WCR's stuff when I heard it, it's just anything LP usually turns me off due to the LPF negativity/exclusivity issue. Do I think that the EMG 81 in my favorite rock Gary Moore tone is the ultimate choice, yes, an ordinary HB wouldn't have worked with that massive setup..

the 89 EMG is voiced differently than the 81 and is splittable ....i think it fits very well with less gain styles but can also handle high gain very well ...very polyvalent and i really don't think it sound artificial at all , it's just that it's precise as a knife ...it was one of the best offer at the time i bought it ....considering there was no internet in 97' , no WCR ,no manlius , no pup artisans available for spare parts ...the choice was easy , and after testing a LOT of current production and vintage guitars after it's still a pretty good choice , not the best in each style , but it's a DESERT ISLAND pup after all , the 89 do almost all styles with the same level of accuracy ....don't wan't to sound cliché but a lot of guys that have tested my axe were left  , it's not a question of beeing overly proud of my good taste you know ...
someone have tested the 89 in the proper wood body and pro hardware ?

Those EMG's definitely have SOME serious merit, cause David Gilmour certainly gets some ultra-spectacular tones from them, but Im sure his FX and amp rig is mind boggling. His tone on "Sorrow" is just phenomenal, and IMO rivals ANY tone ever recorded.

Very interesting info, appreciate the replies and banter.
I stuck an old (8.5K) SD '59 in the bridge the other night, and I liked it 10x better than the silly SH-5 I recently (regrettably) bought.:( The reviews kinda swayed me, but I *chose* to buy it. Do'h!
In all honesty my stock Epi bridge p-up sounded much better than that SH-5 abomination, both measuring near 14K if memory serves.

Right now liking the '59, but may look into that WCR Fillmore, or maybe the Darkburst they offer.
Cool stuff no doubt. Pricey, but not so much more than the Gibson branded stuff.

Rick Norman (The Dr.Vintage) not associated with Dr. Vintage pickups, has announced his line of Burst inspired pickups, some of which I was fortunate enough to hear over at his place when he did the work on my '52 Goldtop for me. Rick has been seriously at work on these pickups for some time, I think he has a real shot at the hand-wound market:

For only one bridge pickup I'd go for Pearly Gates, although I do prefer other pickups for other things. Can I please have an Alnico Pro II for the neck though. Couldn't live without it.
So I like purple, okay!!!!!!

That IS a really good neck pickup, even compared to stuff thats way more expensive. The Pearly Gates neck pickup isnt bad either, but isnt as "polite" as the Alnico Pro II.
