Hendrixs amps time line?
Does any one know of the time line of the amps Hendrix used. His early recordings I assume were KT66 amps. When did he get EL34 amps and when did he get the spilt cathode amps of 68 and the latter amps 69-70. I am wondering which songs were recorded with what amps. I am reading a book called "Setting the Record Straight" which really goes into the time line of his recordings but want to figure out which songs are which circuts. Thanks

Re: Hendrixs amps time line?
Im sure theres a large gray area on exactly what was used for what song but basically speaking, hendrix started touring around with various bands as an up and coming musician using a twin reverb. Then he went to england to form the experience and used the kt66 marshalls. I believe the are you experienced album was recorded entirely within 1966 so it couldnt have been anything else marshall wise. Following that it seemed that whenever marshall updated their super lead circuit, jimi was using the most current ones available. Although, around 68 he was pretty experimental with amps (sunn, fender dual showmans, maybe sound city or that mightve been earlier) then in 69 it was pretty much 69 super lead split cathode el34 amps. I think he used the 69's throughout the remainder of his life in 70. So in chronological order you've got fender twin, marshall super lead with kt66 and shared cathode, sunn, fender dual showmans, back to super lead although now el34 and split cathode. Come to think of it I think I saw online once a silver face 69 fender twin reverb for sale that was supposedly owned by jimi. He may have used the twin as well as tweed bassmans on various recordings. I think he also liked to use the fender champ as a little practice amp for himself. Hope that helped. I think most jimi sounds are obtainable on a 69 style super lead, and a twin reverb.

Re: Hendrixs amps time line?
Acording to the book which Eddie kamer is a big part of (Setting the record straight) Hendrix only recorded Hey Joe and Stone Free in 66. The rest were recorded for AYE in the first few mounths of 67 with the album realeased in may 67. So I am trying to figure out if and when he changed from KT66's to EL34's and when he changed to the latter split cathode amps. According to the book by Kramer (Setting the record straight) he recorded

Re: Hendrixs amps time line?
This is something I've been pondering too, so if anyone's willing to do the dirty work, I'd love to chip in. I think it should be possible to string together the info based on correctly dated onstage and in-studio photos. Over the years, he had a lot of amps, sure, but if the photos are correctly dated, one could trace the timelines of the different amps by comparing touring schedules and recording dates with photos showing either shiny new amps, medium worn ones or severely tattered ones. Add to that the different front panels (JTM45, JTM, JMP) and different cabs (pinstripe, basketweave) and one should be able to make at least a qualified guess as to which amp was used when.
As for AYE, it seems that all the photos I've seen up to at least mid-67 show only JTM45 front panel amps. You can be 99% sure those are KT66 amps. The European fall tour of '67 shows him with one JTM/black flag panel amp and one JTM45 panel amp. Not sure when the first JMP amps showed up, but he did have a shiny new backline for the December 24th(?) show at the Olympia(?) in London. Most likely JMP panel amps, and I'm guessing 100+100+32+32 filtering, shared cathode preamp circuit and Dagnall OT (though possible the latest Drake EL34 OT).

Re: Hendrixs amps time line?
So then what was the Dickenson amp. This amp has EL34's and was deffently used at Montery. Which means it probably was used on Are you experienced. Did it have KT66's in orgionaly. Can you convert a amp to EL34's Here it is Dickenson Hendrix AmpRoe wrote:I've said this before. AYE is kt66s/1202-84 and axis is 1202-119/el34s and sound city

Re: Hendrixs amps time line?
The Dickinson amp has an OT designed for KT66s. Dickinson probably put EL34s in it because KT66s were getting hard to find. You can do that if you compensate by mismatching the output impedance setting with the cab's impedance.
As Roe said, everything Hendrix from October '66 up to at least mid-67 is KT66s. After that EL34-based amps seem to take over.

I didnt realize gypsy blood and midnight lightning were so early day, recorded in 67. Those are two of my favorites. So I guess it was the 67 super lead on that

Re: Hendrixs amps time line?
For me classic Hendrix tones start with the JTM 45/100 of course, continue with the Black Flags, the JTM 100's, 10000 series, the JMP's for me are more hit and miss and Jimi had more difficulty getting a consistent ly great sound though LA Forum '69, obviously BOG (with EL34 Super Leads, heh, heh!!) are exceptions.
My fav tones are (recorded) with the earlier Marshalls, imho..

Re: Hendrixs amps time line?
I feel the same way about that. Though the live at berkly show he had a great tone there. Hendrix with pretty much any plexi is good though.yngwie308 wrote:For me classic Hendrix tones start with the JTM 45/100 of course, continue with the Black Flags, the JTM 100's, 10000 series, the JMP's for me are more hit and miss and Jimi had more difficulty getting a consistent ly great sound though LA Forum '69, obviously BOG (with EL34 Super Leads, heh, heh!!) are exceptions.

Re: Hendrixs amps time line?
the two latter are basically identical. the 45 has a clearer, more linear sound and is not as loud as the later amps. listen to AYE for a good example of the 45 with a fuzzbasile865 wrote:could you guys explain to me the difference between the jtm45/100, black flag, and jtm100?

Re: Hendrixs amps time line?
ive never heard of a jtm100, how are they different from your basic super lead? Theres jtm100, jmp100 (which i think is like the master volume version right?) and then my super lead reissue which is the mkII I guess.

Re: Hendrixs amps time line?
basicly JTM100 is a KT66 bass amp with a brite cap to make them a lead and JMP100 are EL34 amps which were bass/lead brite caps then leads all non master volume amps. Here are some links so you can hear. The ealy plexi links are JTM then the second gen are true super lead JMP EL34 amps
