Hartley: Jimi Hendrix Gear (book)

Post by Roe » Thu Nov 19, 2009 12:14 pm

got it, and it sucks. the amp info is inaccurate and not detailed at all. also very little details about fuzzes and octavias. This is book for those who like to pay a lot for nice pics of some guitars

Unfortunately, i agree with you...

Jax Vibra chorus photos and references instead of univibe? Come on guys, go to the EMP and get some photos, even i have got one...

The wah section is a joke..."1968 Vox wah-wah effects pedal" (says the title, page 104) ??? He used wahs even before 1968, there are tons of photos (live, for instance, 18 August 1967, Hollywood Bowl)...only a picture of a Voxking? At least show one of the picture wah's jimi used to own...even i have a huge photo of the one that got auctioned (tape on the bottom plate)...no reference of Clyde McCoy, V846...nothing..."The wah pedal that Hendrix used was a 1960s designed by the Thomas Organ Company and manufactured by JEN Elettronica Pescara in Italy" (page 104)...

An 175 page book with no reference of Dallas-Arbiter Fuzzface? (only a small photo, page 73)...

Nice photos of his V gibsons and nice pre '66 gear reference but coooooome oooooooon!!!!

I wasn't optimistic that this book would be the "definitive" Jimi's gear book but honestly i didn't expect to be that bad...

Anyway, IMHO...

the book shows pics of the dickinson amp with 6l6s and merely talks about this amp using el34, not mentioning kt66s at all

thats interesting. The dickenson amp is that plexi of hendrix's that that guy bought right? I didnt know 6l6's could work in a plexi amp. What would the amp sound like as far as its grind and output?

6l6s work in all the kt66 and el34 amps. the first jtm45s even came with 6l6s/5881s.

6l6s gives a cleanish sound with tighter bass and less fat mids. also, it's a little more edgy. it more like EJ's dirty rhythm sound

Just cause it fits in the hole does not mean you can plug it in and bias it :D

that's possible, the pic isn't that good. clearly hendrix used kt66s in the early days. the book just sucks

Great Call I think! We should have a sticky called Is It Too Loud Out There? Maybe we should start in this post compiling info year by year before we make that sticky.

I would love to know when Hendrix bought his split cathode amps and stoped recording with the old shared cathode ones. I guess some time in 68 durring the recording of Electric Ladyland but would love to know for shure. :D

It does sound like a disapointing read about Jimi's gear. First time I have heard about it. Imo I feel that early Hendrix stuff is definitly kt-66's and really doubt that is a el-34 sound. At least for say are you experienced . No mention of arbiter fuzz's that sucks. Oh well.

the author does not know his marshall. to name but one example, he describes the very early 100watters as superleads
