PS- I forgot to mention to the "experts" that with this nut the string length has changed...............Until you fret the first note and the from that fret to the bridge, the length starts over!

Since you now acknowledge that the string length has changed, you should "note" that the string tension and
intonation change as well, thus compensating the tuning of the instrument.......
like lowering the tension on the low E string to D.....
by "your" thinking since the string is only D at the nut, when you fret, the notes would still be the same as before...cause afterall it starts over at the first fret....
oh yeah...the world is still flat...

I want my music waking up the dead...
Dont tell me to turn it down
if its not loud enough you must be really old...huh,what,what did you play?

Yes, I believe the overall intonation is changed with the modified nut.
Only stands to reason since you are changing the overall length of the strings with these nuts that you have to intonate it after installation.

Huh?
I don't remember. I apologize if I left you hanging. Last I remember, you had scored an old Blue MXR 6 band, right? I don't think you had gotten it yet but you got it on e-bay.

Cheers to the ears.

Re: Earvana Floyd Rose Nut
The regular Earvana nut works quite well, though the material very unstable. Just dropping it in is fine, but when I filed the slots to set the string height where I wanted it, it was very difficult to get it to stay in tune. It gets better over time, but I wish they were made out of a harder material. Of course, this Floyd nut shouldn't suffer from that. With a well intonated guitar and good tuning method, most folks probably don't need something like this. Still, it does work and can help those who are more distracted by sour notes than others. Indeed you re-intonate once installed, so it makes a difference over the entire fretboard. There are a couple of camps here, those that consider the natural tonal flaws to be a part of the "magic" of the guitar, and those who have trouble getting beyond it to enjoy the experience of playing. The Earvana nut or Feiten system or just tuning with a quality strobe tuner and proper offsets can make a big difference for those in the latter group. YMMV.

Re: Earvana Floyd Rose Nut
Hey, Im just wondering, how is this different from moving the individual slots on the bridge back and forth. On Floyd Roses and some fixed bridges you can move those individual slots where the strings lay back and forth. Which in turn shortens the string length or lengthens the strings. Isn't that the same and what this nut does. I could see how it would work on some bridges like on gibson guitars where where the bridge is just one piece of metal but for bridges like mine or floyds can't we get the same effect with our bridges. Just a thought. I don't really care, I gave up on trying to have a perfectly intonated guitar a long time ago.

Re: Earvana Floyd Rose Nut
What seems to elude most people is that compensated nuts are actually moving the nut closer to the 1st fret by varying degrees per string. If you move the nut closer to the 1st fret you are actually moving ALL frets closer the the original nut, this has great effect on tuning, basically you are shortening the scale length a bees dick, once you understand this you can see that is is much more than just shortening the string/s
With all of my guitars I move the whole nut 2.5 mm closer the the 1st fret, this improves tuning no end for those of us that are anal about tuning. You can see the insert of maple where the nut used to be, and, it's a lefty.

Re: Earvana Floyd Rose Nut
So is shortening the scale length from the nut different from shortening it from the bridge? Cause thats how you fix the intonation on my guitar and others like it. By moving those slots on the bridge back and forth till the open string and 12th fret have the same pitch. It seems like thats what this nut is doing. This is confusing. I'm going to bed.

Re: Earvana Floyd Rose Nut
Good point Rob, you are correct, all I can say is that by moving the nut towards the 1st fret along with the ability to still adjust the string length via the bridge saddles you are able to get a better tuning result. It's only when you become totally infuriated with the normal state of affairs that one is able to take in new ideas in the hope of some improved tuning. There are many who are quite happy with the status quo and then there are others who just go nuts over the tuning abnormalities, of which I am one, and I can categorically attest to the moving of the nut as being a significant improvement, not perfect but much better, that's just me though.robertmendeziii wrote:So is shortening the scale length from the nut different from shortening it from the bridge?

Re: Earvana Floyd Rose Nut
Since the nut is taller than a fret, the string has to stretch more on notes fingered near the nut which can cause them to "sharp out". Filing the slots deeper helps, but of course you can only go so low and not have a lot of buzzing. Unlike changing the string length at the bridge, changing the length at the nut mitigates the tendency for notes "sharp out" when fingered near the nut.
