What are Berkley positions ?

Jimi, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Leavitt" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; is the cat who made these 5 shapes popular among the Jazz crowd. I think everyone should learn them.

Re: Guitar Lessons: Scales
ahh... cool. Breklee.
Yes, everyone should. Did you put the tab there? GJ!
Literally, here in the States, we basically study one (western) scale. Best studied by the numbers. Using the simplicity of a piano, the C is your one to the octave. So, 1 to 1 is C to octave C. 2 to 2 is B to B etc. The scales now turn to modes, but in this breakdown you can see what is happening in these Berklee positions to best understand where the author is coming from. In other words grasping what is being taught. Out of knowing this simple formula all your scales including the beloved Pentatonic come alive and open doors not only to playing leads but to Chord Melody and soloing over progressions. Mathematics are key to understanding the chemistry of music.
I recently googled : list of musical scales. WOW !
At M.I. we concentrated on the Western and all its derivatives (maybe Todd [Thorny] can correct me if I'm mistaken).
There are soo many scales I can see the confusion and frustration with players who just want to get a hold of the basics.
Keep up the good work, Cary.

Re: Guitar Lessons: Scales
Jimi, I like these shapes because the are 2 octave shapes, starting on the 6 th str, but of course you can start them on the 5th, too, you just to use linear scale on the high E to complete it. Other scale shapes on the internet and methodology usually uses a mode in a certain key for the whole neck, and so on.... that is isn't for me. That is memorization not application. I am not that smart, I want to USE my ears, not waste energy on becoming more visual about music. With the scale shapes, I listed them in order, too btw, they are inter-link and knowing the shapes allows you to dismiss the mode or scale formula and let your ears guide you - it's more intuitive. That said, playing through all of the shapes say on two strings at a time help force a box shape mentality. My riffs, speed builders, etc are also listed above and are excellent references, too.

Re: Guitar Lessons: Scales
While we delved pretty deep into the modes as they relate to the major scale at M.I. As mainly a rock player I have found I tend to view them as different "Flavors". There are a few intervals in each mode that give you the signature sound of that mode. I actually use them in relation to the pentatonic shape more than anything just out of practicality.JimiJames wrote:ahh... cool. Breklee.

Re: Guitar Lessons: Scales
Thanks for posting these links, I bought my teenage son his first guitar several months ago and he is getting frustrated because he's having a hard time completing a song. These links will certainly help him.
