2204 build components list and till completion...
Hi guys been on and off on this wonderful forum page that I know off here... its going to be my first build and am very optimistic about doing a clean neat outcome with all good quality components.
basically I am thinking of getta the chassis and faceplates + hardwares from valvestorm and rest of the electronic parts off from watts tube audio. typically they offers a 2204 electronic kit that includes Sozo caps, F&T filter caps and Sprague mica capacitors.... I was wondering if any advise to take on for it as the Sozo seems to be tempting as its renowned to be good upgrades but still not aware of the tones that would bring...

Re: 2204 build components list and till completion...
I find 'em perfect for a 2204. I find Mallories (Cornell CD150's) far too smooth for a 2204. But it all depends on your tastes, I guess. I like 'em with a bit of force, sparkle and aggression. But not too much gain...
So I like purple, okay!!!!!!

Hi demonufo good to have you back... i have heard the mullard mustard caps, the Sozos vintage (Yelllows) and the Sozos (Blue) no idea which would be better for a more natural aggressive and as what you say sparkle ?demonufo wrote:I find 'em perfect for a 2204. Re: 2204 build components list and till completion...
am looking at the same time for a chassis which is large enough for me to do necessary modifications in future for the listed below... so far I have concluded to go with a JTM45 chassis which has the correct number of preamps and recto indentation I needed for the build...anyone with any idea?
2 EL34/6l6/KT88 with a tube selector at back panel
4 preamp tubes & one gain stage switch in front panel
1 recto & a silicon/tube switch in front panel
An effects loop
PPIMV controls
this DIY maybe rated for 60watts amp since its a KT88 ? switchable? any gurus would like to advise? if this package would be doable?
Thank you !

Re: 2204 build components list and till completion...
Why not get a 12 series spec chassis? Marshall used these for their 50w Super PA amps as well as 12 series.
It will give you 4 preamp tube holes, you will have 5 holes which you can use 2 for output tubes, maybe one for a rectifier and the other 2 for filter cans.
There is plenty of space for the mod board in the preamp (same size as the trem board so that you can play neatly!)
Yes you will need a laydown 50w PT (same cut out size as a 100w) and will need to drill 4 holes for the OT feet.
Take a look at the custom build 50w OT over on the Marstran forum too

but I have seen amps with two KT88 is usually off 60watts? I guess a tube kt88 would be 30 watt rated? EL34 @ 25watt....
would a 50watt PT and OT serves what a KT88 should sounds like? would it ever gets sagged tone? if someone would give me a far better insight on the tranny design of for an amp to accept EL34,6L6 and KT88... ?
would I be looking at values changes too for electronic components on board and on Sockets?

The park amps ran KT88s (Drake 784-139OT) with little bother and were labelled as 75watt, you might need to drop the output grid resistors down from 220k to say 100k but everything else could be pretty much the same. You can get 60w from EL34s if you hit them with a really high plate voltage (600v) like the early Laneys, but do not expect them to live very long even with xf1 or xf2 Mullards! 6550s or 6L6s can do the same.hopkinWFG wrote:neikeel wrote:Why not get a 12 series spec chassis? I am not sure if its doable... which means to say I gotta tie down different grid resistors to getta correct voltage working for el34, 6l6 & kt88 with a 60watt rated granny set?neikeel wrote:The park amps ran KT88s (Drake 784-139OT) with little bother and were labelled as 75watt, you might need to drop the output grid resistors down from 220k to say 100k but everything else could be pretty much the same.
