2203 build
hey what's up guys so I built a 2203 clone and added a forth gain stage up front half triode, found a layout SDM that is and made a few changes etc . I'm looking to make the amp really tight for metal playing, I changed the value of the first filter cap to 2.2nf second to 2.2nf and third to 4.7 nf and for sure made a world of difference but it's still could sound better . Looking for tight low end thump, Changed the slope resistor to 68k and tremble cap to 250pf also PI cap to 250 also. Here is the layout I used .
I used 220nf for first cathode cap, 1uf for second and none on 820ohm cathode resistor just so you guys know .

4 gain stages... Make an ENGL type from it, and you will be much closer to the thing you want.
I have a JCM800 50watt and I use a Soldano GTO clone in front of it... Well, 7 gain stages is more than enough for me:) Plus the noise is very low, because of the DC for the heaters in the GTO clone. Add a PPIMV Lar/Mar - works very well.

In my 2204 build, I added a fixed resonance cap to the NFB circuit and used a 27k on the 16ohm tap. It's an unusual NFB setup but it did help to tighten up the bass considerably.

Cool trick man . I added a resonance mod with 1 meg pot with switch to go to 8 ohm tap and 16. Going to try the 4 ohm tap tomorrow . The amp is really dark sounding I'm looking to get some more highs out of it . The tremble pot is maxed out which is kind of weird for a 2203 type. How could I get some more tremble range back?

Thanks man yea I built a 2203 ceriatone kit then changed it to the SDM layout was a little tricky but pulled it off, then changed a few things to my liking . The amp really slays just trying to voice it now . The tone stack only has 4 components seems there is not that much you can do to it. Got a 68k slope resistor which I like, tried a few different caps also . Would like some more hair from it . The tremble pot is maxed out and could use some more highs.

Put the cap back on the gain pot. I like a 5n personally but 1n is a good place to start. Removing the cap works for some people. But for me personally, I think it neuters the amp too much. Takes away the bite and some aggressiveness.

Hi
From a very short look to the layout it seems to me that you are going from the 1st (extra) stage to a 68k / 220k divider through a 220k grid stopper into the original "1st" stage, right?
If so, I think, this is way too much - try to raise the 68k (I would recommend a 500kB pot for testing instead of 68k/220k. If you miss some highs, lower the 100pF PI cap to 47 or even less (you can also remove it).
What kind of tones you are in? Is it more a "grind" crunchy tone for the lower notes or is it a overdriven mid scooped for rhythm?
