Hey Dan,

Try out the Fender custom shop '69 woodstocks for that hendrix tone you were asking about.
About $130.00 a set, 5.5 henries, staggerd poles: alnico V underwounds.
I have them in my strat and they are incredible for the money.

Take care,
Dave

Does sound good. I really want taht glassy tone. Have you tried the lo output Fralins? Im using those now. Are those custom shops strong in the mids?

Dan I'm familliar with these, enamel wire, on the right road for what you're after but sounded a bit thin and uninspiring IMO. Not dynamic or responsive enough to pick attack for me. Fender pitch that they're hand wound...yeah right. Mids aren't that strong, they are pretty low/std output after all. If you like pups set low in the pickguard these will be very low output. All the post CBS custom shop repro strats are loaded with these if you want to try them. Underwound fralin woodstocks have a bit more mid and bottom as well as a more grainy bite thanks to the over-charged magnets. They would be my choice.

Hi Dan,

Ya know..i'll tell you, currently the custom shop '69's hold a current 9.8 or 10 rating on the harmony central reviews. I forgot to mention to you that each pick up is sighned and dated by abigail yabarra, the same woman who used to customize and wind hendrix's pick up sets. She has been with fender for something like 40 years, so there will be a resale value that will escalate with time. I have been playing them for three years now. Back when I was trying to decide...it was a choice between the CS '69's, or the Kinman woodstock set. It was a hard choice and I may still pick up a set of the kinmans because they are so distinct sounding..very expensive though.
About your question.... and please trust me here because this is the very best way for me to describe the custom shop '69's.
If you REALLY listen the album "Bold as Love" by hendrix, it is almost dead on. I am a strat freak and if I can help you with anything concerning strats or pickups and such, please let me know.
Here is a link to some sound clips for the custom shop '69's:

Thanks for the info Dave. I really didnt mean to come off as if Im trying to cop the Hendrix tone because really, Im not but the Band of Gypsys sound has always been a good target 'area' for what I want which is the opposite of the more 'American', SRV kind of sound. A bit thicker in the mids and glassier. Not as much of that midrange scoop strat sound. Hendrix is the best example of that.

I've kinda been eyeing Lollar's Strat sets.....just haven't decided to take the plunge yet, or which set to pounce on.
Jeff at HighOrder has mentioned getting into Strat pickups at some point too, I'd love to see that as happy as I am with his buckers. Speaking of which, my new neck winds should be shipping from him soon!!! :D :D
