Computer Browsers can't get online

Post by mightymike » Fri Feb 15, 2008 7:24 am

Email works, and updates work as long as a browser is not involved.

This is on a different computer. (My Girlfriends)

She has no AV or Spyware programs.

Her kid goes on myspace and hacks.

when I try to launch IE, it quickly goes to res://webhelper.dlll/dnsserror....

Then it says. This website wants to run the following add-on: 'Shell Doc and Control Library' from 'Microsoft Corporation'. If you trust click here.

At this point I might have to use my computer to download Spyware doctor and a good AV software, burn it to cd to get it to her comp.

Check the proxy settings, they might be wrong, or auto config has made an error.
Check the Firewall settings.. This is XP ?

Also download Firefox to see if it runs, to check if it

See if you can start the computer in safe mode with networking. If you can you can open your browser (hopefully) and go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ and do an online virus/spyware scan..good luck

I'll try your Ideas.

Netscape won't work either.

I just downloaded Spyware Doctor with Antivirus which cleaned my comp which was really infected lastweek, when my girlfriends daughter when on myspace from my comp. I also got a free AV software from CNet, and am burning both to a cd to install on her comp.

Thanks for the help

Checked the ports, and installed the SpywareDoctor, which detected nothing bad.

I was able to get online in safe mode

I'm doing the housecall scan now.

Too bad nobody helped the guy.

I opened up Network Diagnotics for Win XP,
and here's what it said.

"Windows cannot connect to the internet using HTTP,HTTPS, or FTP. This is probably caused by Firewall settings on this computer

Check the firewall settings for the HTTP port (80), HTTPS port (443), and FTP port (21).

You might need to contact your ISP or manufacturer of you firewall software."

Do you have a router? If you do restart that . Usually you have to power off for 30 seconds or so and then reset it by pushing in a little button with a ball point pen or toothpick to reset it back to the original settings.

Yes I have a wireless router.(Well my girlfriend does) I posting this from my laptop, which is getting online through that router. So I know it's working. Her comp is wired directly to it, my comp has the wireless to it.

Nuke and pave option is looking better. Is there a way to just reinstall IE.

She also had that Norton Internet Security 2006 which couldn't totally get uninstalled. It needs a password.

Nuke and Pave may end up being what I have to do here. Damn!
