Cab recommendations for my Metro Plexi

Post by Bluesking89 » Tue Mar 25, 2008 1:51 pm

Howdy folks - I just acquired an early Metro Plexi (100 watt) with a PPMV.

I'm looking for ideas on a matching cab - here's my thoughts:

1. I love the classic Greenback tone - that's the sound on all my records (Free, Mountain, Cream, etc). In order to get Greenback tone, I'll need a full size cab to handle the wattage.

Is there another avenue for a 2x12 with a higher wattage Greenback clone?

2. What about a 2x12 loaded with a pair of British-flavored Eminence speakers - maybe a Private Jack and Gov.?

3. If I'm way off base, I'm open to any and all suggestions.

I don't know what the policy is about plugging other makers, but...

Essentially the headshell is from mojotone.

Avatar Speakers, sells cabs that are also from mojotone...

Therefore, hit up www.avatarspeakers.com and get one of the two "good" looking cabs - they'll match the head in terms of looks (after removing the logo), and you can choose a number of speakers.

My vote is for G12H30's...

Also, another point to consider, is that the amp isn't putting out 100w until it's turned up pretty good. With a PPIMV installed, you're likely to never need more than 50w of power...plus, you could always pull two power tubes for the added "insurance"...

Is there any risk of damage if I run it with just two of the power tubes?

If I remember correctly, you pull the outside two tubes, right?

If that's the case, I can just use a 2x12 w/Greenbacks, right?

Thanks!

A good general rule of thumb is to put together a cab that is 1.5

Which Fanes are you recommending?

I don't especially like the mid hump of the Celestions - especially the 65s.

The ones I heard were re-issues Mark Huss had a in a Swanson Hylight-styled 2 x 12" cab. They could handle a 100w amp with ease. These were some kind of re-issue Fanes, not the Axioms (which I haven't heard).

Go check out the Speakers thread. Jim Scumback just proved out 100 watt celestion style cones.

You can pull one from both the left pair and the right pair...

1 + 3
1 + 4
2 + 3
2 + 4

Half the tubes, half the impedance, so run a 16ohm cab into the 8ohm tap...

No risk...

And yes, you could run it into a 2x12 w/ greenbacks.

Also, consider the volume you'll be running at. Are you running it with everything on 11? If not, then I wouldn't be too concerned with running a cab that is rated higher than the amp. There are peaks that go over the rating of the speaker, but, both the speaker and the amp are rated RMS - so a 100w RMS amp, into a 100w RMS cab, is all good...

Talk to John over StoneAge Custom Cabinets!

http://www.stoneagecustomcabinets.com/default.php

I have a 212B loaded with a Scumback H75/H55 mix and it sounds awesome! The Scumbacks come in an HP version that is rated 65watts. The cabinet is a 1/3 open back but I had John at StoneAge make me a panel to close the back up. Very versatile and sounds amazing. I also had Greenbacks in this cabinet and it sounded really good as well, as the Greenbacks were very broken in. I had the cab made with black levant, gold piping, gold handle and Salt and pepper grill cloth. Matches a small box head very nicely as you can see. The metro is a big box head so take some measurements. If you want a bigger cabinet he makes the 212B. John is a great guy to deal with and sends you pictures as you cabinet is being made. If you need a cheaper alternative for a 212 check out the Mojo 212 slant cabinet (second pic). I had this cabinet but living in NYC I could not get it into a cab so I had to sell it! It line up perfectly with a small box head (again I am pretty sure the 100 is a large box) - even the piping! Not as tough as the StoneAge but you can find them cheap on eBay from Port City Music sometimes.

I measured my Metro head and it's 29 inches wide - all the cabs from Avatar and Mojotone are 28.5 inches.

Did I measure my head cab wrong?

It's an early version (2001) when Metro was first building the Plexi heads.

Well, I just ordered the cab I mentioned earlier from Avatar, so when it comes in, I'll let you know if it fits...
