Metro JTM 45 BB combo with Golds

Post by VelvetGeorge » Sat Mar 21, 2009 12:52 pm

Here's my 45 build in a 2-12 Bluesbreaker cab with Celestion Golds. Just a few Free clips (NOT All Right Now! LOL)

I mixed in a lot of room mic to capture some sense of space. Not bad for my living room.

Guitar: Les Paul with DT-102 Throbaks (note: some noise when I take my hands off the strings, better look into that)

Amp: stock 45 specs, Allen Bradley CC's, Sozo Vintage caps, Mullard RI 12AX7's, Valve Art KT66's and GZ34.

Settings: Top left input, Volume I: 9, Volume II: 0, Treble: 6, Middle: 6, Bass: 4, Presence: 5

Mics: Close: AEA R-92 ribbon. Far: Beyer M-160 (delayed to taste).

DI: Radial JDX cab emulator box between the amp and speakers. Just blended in a little.

Mic Pre: AEA The Ribbon Pre.

Recorder: Apogee AD-16X into Nuendo at 44.1k/24 bit. Mixed down to 160kb MP3.

EDIT: I added more combo clips: http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default ... dID=785710" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It's cool that Roadrunner recently posted a JTM 45 recording that used the same R-92 and a Royer ribbon mic which also sounds great. Really sweet combination for classic tones.
I have more clips to mix from this recording and will post as I get them done. I also want to put Heritage G12M's in there for comparison.

Hey... what's wrong with "All Right Now?" I love that song. It has been overdone but every single time I hear it, it just brings me right back to high school! :)

KILLER tone George... I love that clip!!! You can really hear how responsive those amps are to touch and guitar volume settings... that and of course, TONE are the hallmark of a great amp.

How do you like those speakers? Do they have much time on 'em? I think a JTM45 and AlNiCo's are really a hard to beat match... it's like they were made for each other.

Excellent recording too, you're right... nothing like some good ribbon mics to get that "fat" thing happening. I'm really getting into the AEA R92 these days. I've had it for quite awhile but I kinda forgot about it 'til recently. I think it's my fave "close" mic'ing solution for a ribbon on a Marshall/Celestion setup.

Thanks for posting that George! :D

Great tone!! Very fat and clear all the notes sing. Will these be offered as kits or just complete amps?

I love All Right Now too! I've just played in almost every clip I ever posted. :D

I love the Golds and they are great in BB combo cab. Especially with the 45. Only about a hour on this amp and speakers when I made the clip, so it still has plenty of break in to go.

Listening back, just wish I would have played some Major licks.

Thanks!

You can build essentially this same amp from the 45 kit. Just add the Allen Bradley resistor option and use Mullard reissue preamp tubes.

Loving the sound, especially with the room. I dont get how some guys can put a SM57 right up against the grill and that's it. It's like looking at the Mona Lisa so close that your nose is touching it. You gotta take a few steps back and enjoy the whole thing! I think this recording captures that.

Agree 100%. I can never stand the sound of certain things close mic'ed only. Snare drum, for one. You gotta have the overheads and/or room mics.

Note: I added the link for the other clips in my original post.

I just checked out the other clips... WAY cool George! Great tone and playing. Those amps are pretty versatile and those clips are an excellent demonstration of that.

Thanks man!! :D

Wow...that sounds awesome! I always have wanted to get a bluesbreaker, probably my next amp in a few years.
