What about the bandwidth of the sliders? Does the 1.2 slider make a sharp spike, or is it a smooth hill that peaks at 1.2, but 900-1.5 are also affected too?

I think that's what you call the "Q" if I'm not mistaken.

Sorry if this was discussed and missed it, but would it be better to lower the value of the 1.6khz slider to 1.2, and leave the 800hz slider as is?
This mod can't get any simpler as it using the 800hz values and just requires a single common part change the 1.6khz I'll bet would require more than 1 part and while doable might be more complicated...

Yep that's the "Q" and it too is designed in with the gyrator calaculations and yes they are boosting sorrounding frequencies but the center one (1.2Khz) is boosted to the max as you can see from all the spectrum pics.

One question I thought of as people were talking about modding their eqs was, does an individual slider control just it's labelled frequency range, or is it interactive with the other sliders like some amp eq sections (bass, mid, treble)? In other words, is it electronically possible for a graphic eq (like a 6 or 10 band) to cause a spike in an in between frequency (like 1.25 Khz) depending on how the two closest sliders are set?
Not generally BUT and big BUT...the mxr 6 band is such an old drifty valued device that you are pretty well gauranteed lap over...
leadguy wrote:I really don't know about this 1.25 Khz spike.

It seems like it's on some things and not others.

Maybe the 1.25 Khz spike on some things is from a Mixer EQ or maybe something else, I just don't know for sure.
For the 100th time we are just looking at ITO and ITO only....For that tune we are referring to the sting which has been shown to occur at the amp level not recording or mixing level.

Love the sound Mark is getting with this pedal mod. That's the closest ITO tone I have heard, and it sounds fun to play. I want one.

Agreed +1 THat mod sounds great! STock + this mod = ITO = NAILED. I liked the improv lines and the wild bends at the end of the clip MArk ;) Anyone - will this mod sound as great with a new MXR does it have to be an old 70's one? THAT'S the 120 dollar question! :D

All the MxR 's are copy clones of themselves ..works on alll...depending on what quality cap you use, you are creating your very own mojo. So Yeah take the plung Cary.. :hairband: :champ:

I had two MXRs, and I sold one because the other sounded a little smoother in the highs and was less harsh. The newer one was from the 80's I think. The one I kept has a script logo engraved on the bottom corner; the seller claimed it was from the 70's, but I have no idea. I opened it up and they look pretty similar, except the older one has some mullard tropical fish caps in it' as I recall the newer one had some polyester film chicklet type caps...I think. You could always try a few different types of caps in your MXR EQ and get that extra little bit of "mojo" rather than paying out the nose for it like I did. :palm: I've seen mullard tropical fish caps for a couple of bucks on ebay. Keep in mind, the difference wasn't that big, but it was noticeable. I'll post a gut shot of mine when I get a chance to do this mod.

For that tune we are referring to the sting which has been shown to occur at the amp level not recording or mixing level.
Well that's just it really, it can't really be shown by spectrum analysis that it is not a board EQ that's responsible for the 1.25kHz and the MXR 1.25khz mod is really just emulating a board EQ.
Pre and post EQ's will have an effect.

I say that modding a MXR to 1.25kHz is an odd thing to do but I suppose not impossible.
Also I would assume that if it was a modded MXR responsible for the 1.25kHz, then any time Ed used the MXR the 1.25kHz thing would show up so I would assume it would be on the Studio version of Eruption but even then the 1.25kHz could be a board EQ.

It's like the perspective for this 1.25kHz mod is just what gear dudes have in their home with no PA's, and Ed was the same but that is not really the case as with Ed there are PA's and the studio involved as well.

Having a 1.25kHz boost from a board EQ is more likely as the 1.25kHz is already on the board EQ and once again Ed like any guitarist went through board EQ's in the studio and live with 1.25kHz sliders.

If we are getting a board bootleg then it's going through the board EQ, if we are getting a garbage sounding bootleg that's not from the board but mainly from the PA then it's still mainly going through the board EQ as the guitar/amp being miced through the PA and board EQ is what is being recorded.

The board EQ settings can change from song to song and even during a song depending on Ed's or anyones instructions to the mixer guy.
I find it hard to believe that Ed would let the mixer guy just do his own thing and Ed would probably have suggested to Ted about when it sounded ok to him and if Ed favours a 1.25kHz upper mid boost from board EQ's for some things then that might explain it.

I don't think its an odd thing at all.

for me i do the best i can standing in front of playing it trying to get it to respond and feel the way it sounds when i hear ITO.

its a little more than what it sounds like coming of the stereo as far as how i relate to that sound. its more of a feel and response thing for me..... its hard to explain really but its the way it feels and responds that i relate to how it sounds let alone just how it "sounds" when i listen to that riff.

its a simple mod to try and see for yourself.

If it works for someone then it works.

I do think it's odd to mod a guitar EQ to match just about exactly a certain frequency on a board EQ, but each to their own.

FWIW you can date your pedal by the CTS code on the side of the slider casing it was dealt with in this post...
http://forum.metroamp.com/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=32797" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

From the 3 early ones I've had they all sounded different the most coming from the first build square box logos ('76) that didn't have the spigot notch on the sliders for the central position.

To me there's an x factor in the way the pedal is pushing the amp that I don't hear in other clips. It's not just the 1.2k frequency that's emphasized (that can be done anywhere in the chain), but it's the way the amp is responding by being pushed with the MXR coloring on the front end that is blowing me away. To me the tone is nothing special, but the fun factor that this setting brings is obvious from the clips, and it is dead on ITO.
