I was wondering the same thing.Strat78 wrote:Tone Slinger, how is your build going?
I don't think anyone knows this section of the forum anymore. Hello...anybody there?
This section would make a great reverb/echo chamber.......

Re: 12XXX Build 05/2010
Better late than never, yes, -32 would be hotter. You always start with the most negative bias voltage you can get out of the amp, usually around -50V. Turning the pot to make the bias voltage change towards -32V increases the bias "current", hence the saying, "turn up the bias". Hope that helps.Strat78 wrote:Ok, so heres some dumb questions: When referring to "turning up the bias", that means the number is getting smaller (like-37 to -33)? Also for the power tubes, if the bias measures on V4 -33, V5 -32, V6 -37 and V7 -35 does that men V5 is the hottest tube?

What is with this extra mounting bracket on the 1202132 in this germino build? I think I need a couple of those!

Re: 12XXX Build 05/2010
I think these mounting bracket came about because all TXs used to be laydown? Accordingly, there were no bell covers with mounting legs; so when someone decided to stand one up, the brackets became necessary.
That Germino pic is a little weird because both sets of legs are there!
Here's a shot of the bracket available from classictone:

Re: 12XXX Build 05/2010
Yup, the brackets go over top of the existing legs. Its my understanding it was for extra strength to hold the OT to the chassis weight wise. Perhaps moving amps around a lot caused the legs to tear or bend from the ot.
The 12XXX kits had the same thing. 2 sets of legs.
You could be right though on the legs being needed becuase the old covers didnt have legs.

Thats the gold colored bracket that came with the kits. Im not sure if its standard on the old 12 series or not. It was thicker, and although the holes line up, the outside dimensions were different than the bell legs.

Re: 12XXX Build 05/2010
Early ones did not have those brackets.
Mine 68 came without, but one of the feet was cracked (if you drop the amp on its end the bell covers bend as the OT tries to part company .
I put one on to protect the OT and I think so should you

I'm getting prepared to try and complete this build. I think It will have the mod 5 or very similar spec.

Re: 12XXX Build 05/2010
Just got this unit yesterday. Its called a Blue Yeti. This is the 24 bit version, but I hear the cheaper 16 bit version is equally good for basic recording.
Having trouble with endless hours of trying to record with standard mics and software I thought I'd give this thing a try. I did a quick clip with this right out of the box last night. Literally 30 minutes out of the box. You just download the driver from the website, plug it in, click on your input and output choice. I just stuck it in front of a speaker, with no real directional assessment or sweet spot placement. Whats great about this is it records in stereo, unidirectional and 360 degrees just by a dial located on it. It also has its own headphone jack to hear exactly what you getting into the mic. There is no box in between this and the computer. Just plug into a USB. I used Audacity but it works with any software. This version also has a XLR jack in the bottom so you can use it just like a regular mic. There are 3 regular mic heads inside, facing in 3 different directions. It is super sensitive. I'm 20 feet away and you can still hear my pick. Definately need to isolate.
I just added a little echo to the mix and this was on the stereo mode. I havent fiqured out the exact level setting yet as you can hear. There is a balance with the gain control dial on it and your computer input level. Havent looked at that yet.
Over all Im pretty impressed with this thing.
BTW, this is the amp from this thread, just as I built it 2 1/2 years ago. I've never changed a single tube or component. Not even a tube! Just as George sent the DIY build kits in the old days. All original. I've estimated over 400 hours of play(noodling ) on this. Thanks George, and VHjunkie.
'78 BlackBack speakers. attenuator at 25% reduced volume. Ohmite resistor in jack 2. Swamp ash body, Warmouth CBS neck(quarter sawn maple/quarter sawn maple cap),original vintage fender trem, 12k Stewmac PU.
