Ok, so greenbacks were made throughout the entire period?

Green magnet covers were from 66-73
Cream or Grey magnet covers from late 73-late 74.
Black magnet covers from 75-80
Hence the names Greenback, CreamBack, GreyBack and BlackBack.

Ok. I appreciate the clarification.
Are the cones date related as well? The reason is, I have a greenback that has a 1777 cone. Most seem to relate that cone to the blackbacks. No connection?

I've seen creambacks in combo cabs quite a way after '74, FWIW. There always is the odd exception.
I can't however guarantee their originality to the combo itself mind...

1777 cones showed up in 1974. If you have one in an older speaker it's a recone.vanhalen5150 wrote:Ok. I appreciate the clarification.

I have two T1460 8 ohm G12H30's with 55hz 102/14 Pulsonic cones. They have pre rola labels from 1971. One is a CreamBack, one is a GreyBack, their date codes are late 73 and early 74.
Go nuts figuring out how all that got together with cones, labels and magnet covers from a four year span and we'll all know what the hell Celestion was doing in the early 70's. My guess is a few pints during lunch, lost cones and labels were used.

The 1777 might be a recone on a green although some have been seen that aren't (post a pic), but it's worth knowing that old celestions around the mid 60's had H1777 on the cone so don't get confused at your peril thinking it's a recone.vanhalen5150 wrote:

Generally between 73 and 76 the code code system was a bit of a mess, unmarked cones, 3's, RIC's 1777's, I've even got a quad of H30's from '76 with 0444 on the cone which according to Barron Greenback could be pulsonic! For me the cap colour and label are not the first thing I check as they often fell of or were wrongly applied ...I actually bought a single BB m on ebay years back only to find it was a black tab pulsonic from 70 all you could see in the sellers pic was a blurred cap label so I took a punt as the price was low. So check the frame stamps.
If your cabs an angled one you might be in luck with the construction as up until 76 they kept the vertical strut inside so with the exception of the larger sound post it's pretty much the same as a late 60's basket.
Btw the speakers will be either BB or CB's and depending on what model it is 30's or 25's.

For pics of old Celestions and their cones/#'s/etc go here:
http://www.thegearpage.net/board/showth ... adid=67646" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The H1777 cone was used in the mid 60's, then the 102 003 Pulsonic cone from 67 on, The 1777 cones are different cone materials than the H1777 or 102 003.
The 444 cone was used in the early 60's, then the 102 014 Pulsonic cone, but these are also is different from the modern 444 cone used in the 70's to present.

Jim, how come you didn't flip the first year '68's to days first in the frame stamp order?. The spill over in '69 left a mix of either way which was a tad confusing.Scumback Speakers wrote:For pics of old Celestions and their cones/#'s/etc go here:

H1777 is different from 1777?
Now I'm intrigued. I'll dig it out and take a few pics.

Yes, the cone make up is different plus pre 68 spks have the stamp model and age on the gasket not frame.
As far as I understand the 1777 and 444 is more of a celestion ref as opposed to a Mueller thing as I think some of the unstamped cones are mueller imo?

Now this is news to me. So in other words, the Green magnet covers were stopped in '73, the Cream or Grey in '74 & the Black in '80. I really thought any Marshall cab in the 1970's would've been loaded with any one of the covers mentioned.Scumback Speakers wrote:Green magnet covers were from 66-73

Here're a couple of pics. OD is 42mm, holes centre to centre= 35.37mm. OD of the bit that goes into the cab is 25.62mm at it's widest point. HTH. Sorry bout the metric.

Ok, I'm familiar with those plates. Cliff put those out for awhile, but with the rough surface, not the polished/shiny surface. Don't know why they even did them that way, but they were cheap. Haven't checked to see if they fit (look like they should, though) but the finish makes for the wrong look.
Then again, if that's not important, go get 'em!
