I'd love to know what mod Lee jackson did for Dave Pritchard's marshalls that were used on the 'raising fear' LP -Armored Saint. Anyone who loves the hotter marshall tones should check this album out. This is a killer marshall metal rock tone, not to mention the fantastic feel and playing of Dave P (R.I.P) who is one of my main influences in that genre of music. The mod involved a 4th preamp tube, but not sure about the specs.

First you need on of these:
Then you need one of these:
A couple of these:
A few of these:
And make sure you wire it like this:
Or this... Your choice:
Oh yeah, make sure you include this somewhere in your amp:
All kidding aside. It isn't a bad mod like Guitar Adjuster said. I have a copy of the video and the care and attention to detail Jackson uses on the amp in it is less to be desired. It requires you popping a new hole for an additional tube in the chassis of your amp.

If that mod sounds anything like that armored saint record....which to me is a perfect cross of 'VH I' and 'kill em all' . It's the most amazing crunch tone i've ever heard and sounds like my head is in a vice when i listen to it. (that's a good thing). It doesn't sound like 4 pre tubes though, but maybe it is. I'm getting close with a '68 plexi that has a push pull pot on the volume knob that simply cascades V1.

Yes the entire mod in the video takes about 15 minutes from start to finish. Though I really wish he would have done an A/B comparison between pre and post mod. This would have been interesting to actualyl hear.Guitar Adjuster wrote:The Lee Jackson mod uses a 4th pre-amp tube, it's pretty simple, he also changes a few values on the board.
Allen, is your 4th preamp mod you installed in your Marshall similar to this one or... I know the one that GuitarAdjuster has in his amp sounds wicked(at least in that 2204 you had).

I agree that Bother Pritchard(I'm still listening dude) had one of the best "Modded Marshall" sounds of all. Raising Fear and that live album of that tour, sound fucking awesome. Pics from that era show a superlead (Metal face probably) and a JMP super lead. Maybe lee's mod sounds better on the older amps like this as compared to the newer 800's that he was modding at that time ? I have a buddy who is really trying to get Pritchards sound from that era. I think I will try and do this "extra gain stage" mod for him.

If your talkin about Pritchards Lee Jackson modded Marshalls, it was the 1959 circuit. He used the 800 channel switchers on the "Delirious Nomad" album, and they sounded thinner and weak in comparison to the "Raising Fear" and Live albums. I think that the Lee Jackson mod would sound better using the better capacitors and transformers of the 70's era Marshalls, as compared to the "Harsher" sounding 800 series. His mods were not available on the Channel switching 800's.

Dave Prichard story ?
Ill tell you anyways. I had some rehearsal space at this place called Francisco Studios in Vernon CA. It was by the slaughter housed in east L.A. so in the summer time, it was really stinky. I was walking through the hallways as I often did trying to listen for talent. I heard someone shine above the locals. I walked in through the open door and this guy was ripping it up through an old super lead type looking amp. The drum set said Armored Saint but I just figured his drummer got a good deal somewher. So he talks with me a while and he plays his amp with a boost on a footswitch. Its definately one of the best tones I had heard. I wasnt a fan at the time so I didnt know it was him. It wasnt until after his death and a picture in a guitar mag that I realized it was him. Really cool guy. No rock star attitude.

great story !! I assumed he stomped on a pedal (or a switch) for leads. I'd be interested in getting his rhythm tones off that album in particular. This is the one-wire mod i'm using which puts it on a push pull knob so i can have the stock 1959 circuit as well. (thanks to SDM for the diagram). http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/6976 ... tchnv4.jpg It gets close, but doesn't quite get the insane preamp crunch Dave gets. He was apparently very intense about his rig, cables, pickups etc all had to be in order. As far as the amp, I agree though that it's a combo of some cascade (and maybe 4th pre tube) in combo with the older stock non-master. Which makes sense since I can clearly hear VH type vibe along with the later master volume cascade tone of 'kill em all' for example. The key to getting his tone would be finding how to get that preamp crunch without adding distortion or breakup. It is a very smooth and middy crunch with very little distortion. Like a certain kind of snow. Those who walk on lots of snow can relate. There's a certain crunch when you walk on semi-dry snow. I hear this in his tone. Can anyone translate the lee jackson mod into a diagram form for us non-schematic reading folk ?
