Snake Oil Strings

Post by Billy Batz » Thu Oct 25, 2007 7:40 am

Had problems with getting these strings in the past so I didnt really give them a trial. Anyone else here play them? What do you think?

I ordered a few sets from the site but that was nearly 2 weeks ago. I guess its still the same deal then with the waiting game.

I use them. Great strings. Don't know how Dean does it, or why they are different from brand x, but they are the best I've experienced for intonation...particularly how well they intonate over a long period of time. I ordered a bunch of sets (nickel and nickel plate versions) way back when Dean was just working off of email, so I don't know how efficiently things are running now. I think I waited awhile to receive them as well, but wasn't really worried about it. IMHO I think they are worth it. If you didn't already, search SOS strings at the gear page...alot of testimonials there.

Im very familiar with the hype. I ordered a bunch of sets about 5 years ago maybe, via email but I had a few 'problems'. Im wondering if they still take months to come in.

I think it was only 2-3 wks for me. I ordered a couple times. My brother uses his stuff as well. I think Dean is an honest guy, not sure why you had trouble. good luck.

Hopefully. Im perfectly happy with pyramids. Theres just so much hype over the snake oils. I first heard it probably 4-5 years ago on Univalve.net forums when I owned a BiValve. That thread about cleartone strings got me thinking about them again.

Last time I ordered it took a couple weeks I think but I ordered special sets. I have bought close to two dozen I like them a lot. I only use the vintage formula as my guitars are all on the bright side so the vintage tones that down just bit.

Dan,

Have you tried Tomastic/Infield power brights? Much better then the Snake Oil brand in my opinion. About the same price. They also make other ones depending on the tone you looking for. But it's hard to beat the Pyramids....

I havent tried that much because Ive pretty much been set with pyramids forever. When I was playing heavily I just used EBs because I did occasionally break a string and I always forgot to wipe down and all that so stringing the guitar with $15-$20 strings wasnt practical. But yeah pyramids were my thing so I havent done much experimenting but Im trying the SOBs.

I switched from GHS to Snake Oils about 8 months back. In retrospect, the Boomers sucked, but they were cheap and easy to come by. I've yet to have a negative experience with Snake Oils. The current set is over a month old, and I've only had one string break (last week), the B, after a few days of glorious whammying. When my stash ran low, I tried going to DR's, but they don't touch the Snakeoils.

Hope they work out for you,
Travis

I use the pure nickel, vintage spec ones and they are very silky. They sound very natural.

After I ran out of sets of snake oils I went out and bought some ernie balls again. Ernie balls aren't bad for me for the first day or so but they turn shit VERy quickly. They just feel dull and crap.

I really need to order some more snake oils. I had forgotten how good they were.
