Caught on Tape: 101 Year Old Woman Mugged
New York City police continue their hunt for a particularly vicious mugger. The suspect has beaten and robbed two elderly women in their apartment buildings. One victim is 101 years old and that attack was caught on tape.
Ida Siegal has the story.
It is hard to watch. A man in his thirties pummeling an elderly woman in her building vestibule. That woman is Rose Morat and she is 101 years old! Now nursing a fractured cheek bone and bruises on the left side of her face.
"All of a sudden I hear this bang and I did not fall and I wasn't unconscious but I was stunned and I thought what happened? And I looked and there's the blood coming out."
Police say it happened at about 12:30 Sunday afternoon. Rose was on her way to church. Her attacker was already in the lobby waiting for a victim. He followed her into the building vestibule and then started brutally beating her. Hitting her again and again at one point he looks right into the camera. Had it happened a couple years ago Rose says ....
"Oh I'd a killed him (if you were younger?) I'm sure I woulda killed him!"
Later that afternoon police believe that same thug went after another elderly woman in Jamaica, Solange Elizee spotted him first in the elevator.
He say enter what floor you go? I like to help old people.
But this man likes to hurt old people! He followed her to her 14th floor apartment and as she was opening the door he attacked.
"I was going to close my door and he say I got you, I got you! He push me and began to beat me all in my face and then after that he pushed me down on the Say don't cry! Why you crying? Why you screaming?"
He got away with 45 dollars and her beloved wedding band from her late husband. They were childhood friends. The two married in Haiti more than 60 years ago.
"Its hard for me, but I'm still alive! And I like alive!"
"I'm not bitter against anybody, but I think he did a terrible thing."
