New RUSH anybody???

Post by tonejones » Fri May 04, 2007 11:48 pm

Hey,

If ya can't tell from my avatar, I've been a huge RUSH fan for a long time.

The new one came out a few days ago, and I gotta say it's their most ambitious album in years.

The guitar is as up front as it's been in a long time (not alot of solos though). Quite a bit of acoustic.... Word is David Gilmour asked Alex why he didn't play his acoustic more. Alex's H&K sounds excellent......

Geddy's still doing his sing-songy stuff from the 80s synth era (yeah we get it Geddy, over the years you've gotten to where you can sing reeeal purty now, no need to prove it to us over and over again in every song...sing a few notes and pound that bass bro!!!!). IMHO

The lyrics are verrrry good (much better than those of the past few albums)......Neal's getting a little dark, but who can blame him with the events that have transpired the past few years?????

Anybody else checking this out, or just this old prog-rocker??? :D
Let's get going, 'cause there's too much music, too little time!!!!

I pre-ordered my copy when I bought concert tix... the CD showed up a couple days ago. Sounds really good, and the more I listen, the more I like it. Love the layered guitars, but a few more old-timey Alex solos would've been nice.

Catching any shows this tour? I got a ticket for the Pittsburgh show (I'll be in Indiana for a Hiwatt convention the day before) plus the Seattle show. Rumor is they're going to play something from '79... something off Hemispheres? That'd be cool. 8)

Havent got the new one yet.
Love Rush but, have been dissapointed with there studio output for years. Dont get me wrong, I still like it, but to a much lesser degree as all of the older stuff.
I still buy every album in hopes they'll put out something mind-numbingly good. They definately have it in them.

Too much sheen, and not enough grit, is how I would describe the songs for the last few.
Alex needs to channel some of that wedding night anger into something brutal

Now Live, they always deliver!!!! Never dissapointed.
Catching any shows this tour?
Still deciding if I wanna make the trip to the St Louis show.

I've only heard it twice through while driving. Unfortunately nothing has jumped out at me.

I am looking forward to seeing them in August. My buddy scored us second row seats, at the box office. I'm still shocked.

I feel exactly the same way man......

Am hoping to get to see them this tour, but finances are a little tight over the summer months so I can't say with certainty (when you're a PT college instructor ya don't get no checks in da summer time).....

Reguardless of what you think of their most recent Albums, there is no denying that Rush puts on one hell of a concert. There precision is just incredible, and they can play it just like the record, or if they do improvise it is in addition, not becasue they can't play it live. They are one of my favorite bands to see live of all time. Tight is an understatement. You really get your moneys worth at one of their shows.
Total professionals..

Very true but I still wish Ged would give us a scream once in awhile amidst the monotone singing he's been doing for the past few decades...."C'mon, Ged...the end of Cygnus X-1...you can do it!!"

Haven't heard the new one yet, but I got 3 calls to go to the August 30th show and turned them down, that was until the 4th call. It was my older sister, seems like my 16 year old bass playing nephew is a Ged head, also his first concert, so I couldn't pass up going, besides it will be my 42nd b-day.

I've never been disappointed with a live Rush show. I do agree that they need to hit their roots a bit. I once read a Geddy interview stating that Rush is a progressive band and to go back would not be progress!! Go figure!

FWIW... Alex doing overdubs:

I see his H&K head, plus what looks to be a JCM800 and a Budda combo (the producer, Nick Raskulinecz, is a Budda endorser).
