Metro Tone Opinions

Post by Dax-The-Ax » Sun May 27, 2007 12:25 pm

To me, the greatest Marshall tone is on songs like the live version of crossroads by cream, Free's all right now, Live Hendrix, that thick dark meaty tone. If I were to build a Metro Amp to get that tone, which would it be? The JTM 45/100? I am getting the amp jones again!!

For Metro offerings your best bet may be either the '67 amp, or the '69 Super Bass. The 45/100 sounds absolutely killer, but also seems (to my ears) too compressed for most of the stuff you've mentioned (at least as a mainly Gibson player from what I recall!!) When I play Crossroads or All Right Now through my 45/100 they aren't as punchy, don't have quite enough headroom, for the attack and tone I hear on those tunes. The cranked distortion is really quite dense with a Gibson.
A Strat works pretty well with the 45/100 though, stays reasonably clean throughout the volume range -- leaves you some room for boosts or fuzzes.

Yep, IMO you need a superlead with EL34s to pull off the Cream tone. That and a Dallas Rangemaster

Same with Kossoff's tone though the rangemaster is optional. I like it (Ramgemaster clone) because it makes the notes played on the top E and B string high up the neck thick, bright and punchy

The 67 should be a good choice for what your after. 2" Drake option. I am very happy with mine for some applications. I have some clips of the 67 & 69 at the links below.

Cheers,

Eric

What about the Hendrix Strat clean chime? Would that be the '66 JTM 45/100? What a beautiful amp that baby is. I have narrowed my choices to either the '66 or a '68 or '69 Superbass.

Yes, for the earlier Hendrixy clean, a JTM100, is perfect. The KT66s sound a little warmer and rounder...nice cleans at low volumes but to make the amp sing gainwise, it needs to be cranked. The later EL34 amps have more bite and gain to them but in all fairness, I've watched video clips and heard mp3s of guys doing both Hendrix cleans and Band of Gypsy lead work on a Superbass with a fuzz in front of it....roll down the guitar volume for cleans. When I sampled George's amps at the ampshow, I gravitated more towards the JTM100 (this is probably because my main amp these days is a Fender Blues Deluxe so I'm used to warmer tones with less bite)...I should've spent more time with the '67 and '68.

Here are a couple Hendrixy superbass clips:

Has George released a JTM 45/100 Kit yet?

No, but I believe chassis for a barebones JTM100 kit is in the queue. It won't have the aluminum-block ends like the originals (or the ones George uses for his amps) but will have everything punched.

Dax, couple of NAMM shows back when Marshall introduced the 45/100 and Jimi stack re-issues Andy Aledort was demoing both of them.

The cleans were gorgeous out of the 45/100. Aledort played Mary, Little Wing and others. It got muddy when cranked though.

The JH stack was nowhere near as pretty clean but wailed cranked.

There you have it. you need both!
