6V6S

Post by Bluesbishop » Fri Mar 04, 2005 11:20 pm

I may have a new favorite tube for the bassman. I LOVE the sound of the 6L6WGB's, but I just received my JJ/Telsa 6V6S from Bob @ Eurotubes.
First impression is WOW!!!!!!!!!!! If clean headroom doesn't matter...these are the tubes for you. I need no booster, nothing.. to get the richest tube overdrive I've ever heard.

With my Les Paul, these just scream..Much like a JTM45 on steriods...with the Strat..Jimi and Stevie are smiling from heaven with HUGE grin..and my custom Tele/Nocaster...well this may just be my favorite tone of all time! With all the Guitars, I roll back on the volume...cleans up to a perfect " clean with a edge" sound...started playing "thank you" by Zep, I may never go back back to 6L6's again!

For $22.00 plus shipping I would HIGHLY recommend trying a set..perhaps the best 22 bucks I've ever spent. :D

Cant argue with you there. I love the sound of 6V6s. Even for a low watt Marshall. Theyre still too compressed in that situation but way better then EL84s. With Fender type amps Ill always put in 6V6s. Theyre every good quality. Smooth, tight, warm, clear. They do compress a lot but not as much as EL84s. I think that helps contribute to their fluidness or liquidness.

billy, are you just using voltage dropping resistors? or zeners? to get the voltage withing spec.?

I would usually just use the right transformer but in the case of my vintage Fenders Id usually just put them in as long as it wasnt too high. Ive had some SF Fenders that ran such high voltages on the 6V6s you could just pop in 6L6s. With my Bandmaster it had about 450 on the screens Id usually just put them in.

I have been using zeners lately for this type stuff though. I just havent gotten around to my Fenders because I havent been using them a lot lately. Those DO-5 zeners are perfect thougha bit pricey at $15. Their 50W. You can easily drop a 100V in an amp like a Fender. Id probably target the voltage at about 400v. If you do ever use them just remember to be sure to get the cathode to ground. I completely forget to take that into account the first time and I got one that was almost useless to me. Theyre fixed in position since they bolt to the chassis and the ground side is on the bolt.

yeah dude, pm me with your mailing address. they are NOS Russian 6n14n-eb. matched by barry over at 18 watt. we had a test group and he sent us all of these tubes and we rated them and stuff. they are much less muddy than el84 and can handle about 100 more volts on the plates. they are not really my style so i'll pass them on to you for free (like i received them), if you dont like them do the same and give them to someone else until they find a home.
