I used to be embarassed for liking "Yes" when i was in middle school, but now it's super cool. It's all about being "Close to the Edge".

Shane,
Yes is never cool, despite their possible closeness to your heart    . Man, every time I hear Yes on the radio, I literally want to drive a stake through both ears. Same goes for Boston, which is the worst band ever, and a few other notables, like Styx, Foreigner, REO Speedwagon, and Journey. Horrible stuff. Although, to be honest, I did used to like Styx when I was in 9th grade. There's my confession.

Check out the movie "Buffalo '66". Totally bizarre scene near the end with Yes's "Heart Of The Sunrise" playing. A perfect match. Don't ask, just watch it. You won't need chemical stimulation to trip out to this. Notice the clay/wax figures.

Honestly. I'm twice Aaron's age and I can tell you from years of listening that Yes BLOWS. My finger can't stab at the radio fast enough when "I've Seen All Good People" comes on. What a pompous load of crap-ola.

I'm mostly a hard/classic rock, blues, funk kind if guy, but my wife caught me jamming with Rascal Flats - God Bless the broken road. Not that I was trying to hide it; but when I turned around she standing behind me laughing, and called me a college girl. It was an awkward momment

I'm a sucker for beautiful arrangements, melodies, and feel.
I love the way the Stylistics transition from chord to chord. The Carpenters purity, John Denver's majestic descriptions. (Great Camping trip Music)

And now after reading the replies I'll have to add YES and Boston to that list. I learned "long distance run around", and "Changes" note for note back in the 80's. I also learned the Harmony leads to "Peace of Mind".

I have to admit I was suprised at the hatred towards YES. I never liked their 70's tone, but I liked that album in the 80's. Their music was a pain in the ass to learn. What about "I've Seen All Good People" is pompus?
To me the lyrics never made much sense. Something about chess?

One thing that still amazes me, is the way a song that you've never been wild about, becomes one of your favorites, once you learn how to play it. It could be a song that you've heard a million times growing up. Those Stylistic songs and The Rolling Stones "Angie Live" fell into that category. It was like finding a gift.

For this reason I keep an open mind to all types of music. It's like a box of Chocolates.

Oh, AAAAAAAMEN! Yes was like an obnoxious bridge between CSNY and Yngwie Malmsteen. Falsetto voices combined with ostentatious "music." It's actually kind of funny the Yes came up. My friend once told me about a recurring nightmare he has in which he's driving, and Yes comes on the radio, and he changes the station, only to discover that every station on the dial is playing Yes. I'm not even making this up; he actually told me about this dream. You see? Not only is Yes "a pompous load of crap-ola," as Andy so beautifully put it, this band also scars teenagers into having recurring nightmares. It's the stuff of the  Deb'l.

I was never into the falsetto thing, just some of the guitar playing. If they had an "I'm better than everyone" attitude, that sucks. I never picked up on it. Now that I think about it, their tone wasn't anything I was would ever want to cop. I learned that shit almost 20 years ago. I was more into VH, Al Dimeola Tour De Force Live, and 80's Metal back then.

I couldn't agree with you more about Malmsteen, but it amazing how fast that guy can go. Must be what he was sniffing. If you've seen his Video, you know what I mean.

Come on man, you have to admit Chris Squire is a badass of bass guitar and Steve Howe is a really unique and talented guitar player. Other than that, i only like the older Yes tunes. I think my favorites have got to be "Yours is no discrace" and "Siberian Khatru". They got all shitty in the 80's like a lot of other bands just so they could stay alive and make money.

Yes's more famous drummer, Bill Bruford certainly influenced a lot of rock drummers today. Unfortunately, I was totally turned off by his massive ego he displayed in his cover story/article in "Modern Drummer".

I dig their oder stuff but they are pretty pompous. Yes in itself wasn't so bad, but the solo projects some of the members did were ridiculous over-the-top fluff. I guess they're kinda like Zappa. You might not like the music, but man, could they play.

Therein lies my point. Malmsteen can play too, but is he making music, or is he, to quote Carlos Santana (who I only like moderately), one of those "Tazmanian Devils"?
