You know, I'll take a mathmatical approach, and say that every new generation of guitarist will, at playing maturity, reach back about 20 years or so to fully understand what it is that they are playing. That puts us right in the "Hair Metal" era, which had it's moments (EVH (He could play- bends, tone, etc,) Lynch, Malmsteen, Thrash (It was better then) , hell, Jazz, Larry Carlton's "Sleepwalk" was BAD ! I've been hearin' them youngster's playin' alot of Maiden lately. And then some (The good one's) will reach back to the 60's and 70's , where all the most groundbreaking shit occured.

I agree with you 100%, TS. Funny how the best players keep taking those backwards steps, and continually discover how great the REAL fathers of modern guitar were. The earliest roots players layed the foundation for literally every great riff we hear these days. Sucks that most of 'em didnt get the recognition they deserved until they were gone.Tone Slinger wrote:You know, I'll take a mathmatical approach, and say that every new generation of guitarist will, at playing maturity, reach back about 20 years or so to fully understand what it is that they are playing. Hey, chief... I thought it was funny when everyone was making such a big deal about Clapton "rediscovering his roots" with that Back To The Cradle CD, when Johnny Winter had put out stuff like that at least 15 years earlier, Progressive Blues Experiment, aka (to us old timers) Austin, Texas when it was first released on vinyl. I love Clapton, but there are a LOT of guys doing the same thing, and not getting as much recognition. (Walter Trout, for example). Page was/is so hot and cold, I really dont count him in with this group. He has done some of the most brilliant stuff ever put to tape, but he has also recorded some of the most sloppy shit this side of George Thorogood, who IMO is the absolute F**KING WORST guitar player to ever make a dime with the instrument. I saw Johnny Winter play WARM UP to him at the Calderone Theatre in Hempstead. Well, I didnt actually SEE ol' Georgie, cause I left after Winter tore the place to shreds. I really couldnt see myself watching him get all the drunks rolling with his "rousing" rendition of "One Bourbon", blah, blah, blah. Id rather listen to my dog snore.NY Chief wrote:Kinda like Clapton, Beck, Page going back to the old blues masters?

Yeah, Thourogood's style is amongst the worse and most annoying I've heard. Clapton has been great, and when he's guesting like he did with Santana a few years ago, can still have great moments. I dont know, the greats are there for a reason, and that reason is not 100% representative of talent. I will ride the Hendrix bandwagon as long as I live, since I always, upon listening to his work, hear him reaching, exploring and taking chances. Some of the other "Greats" just dont do it for me. I like most of the one's who didnt quite make 'Super Star' status. Like Rory Galligher, Eric Bell (Thin Lizzy's origional guitarist), Eddie Hazel, Peter Green, Blackmore, Schenker, Roth.

Some of the best music I've heard come from Clapton is the songs he's done with John Lee Hooker on the "Best Of Friends" CD. Its relatively simple stuff, but it makes you re-listen to it, thinking "damn, thats simple, but its perfect". I agree with your list of "didnt quite make SS status, with the exception of Ritchie Blackmore. He is a pretty influential player (also one of EVH's favorite players) and at the time, Deep Purple was a force to be reckoned with. I saw DP back in the day when they had Ian Gillan singing, and they were a REAL strong band. The stuff that Blackmore is trying to pull off NOW, though, is pitiful. The "Henry The VIII" look with the puffy shirts, and the "renaissance festival" music just aint sellin' records, Im afraid. Well, I guess he's got the coin to do what ever he wants, even if no one else wants it.Tone Slinger wrote:Yeah, Thourogood's style is amongst the worse and most annoying I've heard. Ha, ha, so true. Yeah, your right, Blackmore and D. Purple were huge. Man, richie should have gotten that 'Rainbow' era wig while he was still in Purple. I just recently realized how different he looked when he was in Deep Purple. Oh, yeah, speaking of obscure greats, who was that dude in The Quicksilver Messenger Service ? He was out there.

Thats John Cippolina from Quicksilver Messenger Service, and he definitely fits the mold of obscure great, and out there. Another guy that never quite got SS status, and I never really understood what the big deal was about, was Leslie West from Mountain. He no doubt had killer tone on "Mississippi Queen", but after that, what did ever do?? My sister cuts his hair, and he gave her a copy of the CD "Phat As It Gets". Man, he just CANNOT get rid of the guy banging on that cowbell. EVERY FRIGGIN' SONG has that damn cowbell clangin' away, and there is absolutely nothing on that CD that warrants a second listen. The new line-up of Deep Purple is kinda strange. Steve Morse is a hell of a player, but they should call the band Shallow Lavender, cause Deep Purple, it aint.Tone Slinger wrote:Ha, ha, so true. Saw lots of killer shows there too, like Led Zeppelin waaay back in '74, also Pink Floyd when they recorded "Delicate Sound Of Thunder". Mind boggling stuff, but mostly our minds were ALREADY boggled around that time.
Been trying to "de-boggle" ever since.

They gave me shit about the platter of Belly Bombers but by the time they wiped 'em out the were begging for more!
If I had a dollar for all the miles I logged up and down Hempstead turnpike!
How about the clubs, fillmore? Hammerheads ( the old AND new), Speaks (Speakeasy, The ActionHouse), OBI's (all of 'em), Uncle Bob's Rockin Fun House

Man, the OBI's bring back a LOT of great memories, chief, like the OBI east out in the Hamptons, and especially the OBI south on Ocean Pkwy. Damn, I had a SHIT load of fun at that place!! Now, its just a parking lot, but riding the bike out there early Sunday mornings is great, cause the place really packs out with all sorts of bikes and cars. Spent MANY a night at the Right Track, and also the Malibu on Lido Blvd. Another small place, but full of great memories too, was the Arizona, in Long Beach. Also, there was the famous "My Fathers Place" in Roslyn, and if you remember back that far, "The Rock Pile" in Island Park. Well, as long as we're in Island Park, there is always the "Plantation", which is still there. (more of an "after the club" kinda place, though) Spent lots of "3 hour time blocks" there after trolling the clubs!!
