I have never been to NY, so I have no idea what it is like. I have been to LA, and I loved it. It is a little fake and trendy, but once you see past that it seems like a really cool place. It took me a few days to get used to the different "attitude", so to speak, but there is tons to do and a load of clubs and such. Plus you have the great beaches and wharfs. But I'm sure there is a ton to do in NY as well, so that probably doesn't help.

Of course, I was only there for 2 weeks, so I don't know if I could recommend living there. If I could afford it, I would love to try though. On the down side, the music scene there and on the West Coast in general seems a little.....lacking as of late.

I'm originally from Nor. Cal, but my parents are from L.A., so I've spent a lot of time there. Yes, there is a lot of cheesiness, but there is so much to do down there.
Music- it's a huge place and I'm sure you could find your thing, not to mention all the labels that are based in L.A.
Outdoor activities- Despite the fact that they got a shitload of rain this winter. It's usually sunny and warm down there, you can do tons of stuff outside. Surfing, Mt. bike, Mammoth mountain is 2 hrs away-- Snowboarding. You name it. The weather is awesome, and the beaches are packed full of "chicks".
I was out last Dec, and it was 80 degress and sunny everyday. The beach was packed.

I think the big thing about the mentality of So. Cal is that people are looking to enjoy themselves, and that kind of mentality can come off as being cheesy or shallow.

Just based on weather alone Los Angeles is a better choice. I live about 80 miles from LA now. and last year i tried to move to York PA. I lasted two months! your winters back there suck! how in the fuck can you live in that shit??!! you people are crazy!

First of all if your livin in York PA you better have a farm somewhere or learn to get by bangin ungulates. I always have a great big laugh when Im watching the news and I see some rare freak snow storm in FL or TX or south CA and people dont know what the hell to do. They have to declare a state of emergency. The roads are complete chaos. Half the people are scared shitless and drive 5mph and the other half have no idea they have to drive different then usual. Ill tell you one thing. Living in an area that gets as hot as 100F in the summer and as cold as 0F in the winter makes you capable of living anywhere. OK it doesnt get 120F or -20F but thats an extreme that you can adjust to when your used to almost that extreme of whether. I dont have to worry about where I live or adjust to a new area. I know exactly what I need to as far as house heat, house cooling, pipes, etc, clothes, food, car, driving, etc.. and Ill never complain.

I live in an area where we have snow on the ground from Halloween to the middle of April, and I agree that living in a place that gets hot and cold with snow and lots of inclimate weather would allow you live anywhere. Our winters out here are dry and that's a lot different than the winters in the N.E. You all get that humid cold, goes straight to the bones. BRRRRRRRRRR. I can handle -10 degree day out here anyday to a windy humid 25 degree day out east.

My point is go somewhere new, and if the weather's better, that's a plus.

LA's Music Scene and NY's Scene are both huge and a great choice for that category. I've been all accross this country, and personally wouldn't want to live in either place, but if I had to choose, I would pick LA and get my ass up to the Kings Canyon National Forest as soon as I got a free weekend. It's 5 hour drive, and a whole different world. I think this place rivals Hawaii as the most awe inspiringly beautiful spiritual place on earth imho. Humbolt is beautiful too.

Then if you get another weekend free, take a 4 hour drive to Vegas, then to Laughlin which borders the Colorado river where you can go dirt bike riding, boating, fishing, and Gambling.

The Beaches close by aren't the best. I prefer NewPort Beach and south from there personally. Rent a boogie board, and have a blast.

There are the fake stereotype trendy shallow types, but they're in every city. One trendy thing I like is the food and stores. Everytime I go out to CA there's some new store or restuarant trend that will sweep over the rest of the country.

To me LA sucks just like NY (Because I'm not city folk), but LA puts you within driving distance of some really cool outdoor adventures.

I miss is El Pollo Loco. The food in CA is awesome. What a variety

Hmmm LA or NY. The biggest subculteres in the US are probably coutry/rural vs city/urban. Besides that Id say the 2 largest subculteres are LA and NY. Theyre about the most seperate you get. 2 cities with the most urban culture the US has to offer on opposite sides of the spectrum. I did enjoy LA but I thought if I had to live there I may have murdered someone. I got tired of it fast. Im an east coast boy. But your NJ. Maybe it is better to get somethin new. Its not like you cant transfer.

As far as beautiful places to drive upstate New York is absolutely gorgeous. That's not really the issue.
I've only spent a few minutes in LAX but I've visited my brother when he lived in San Diego. It was so goddam busy and traffic sucked so bad I can't imagine how LA is. I think I'm just too peaceful a soul for big cities.
But let's face it, Aaron can drive to NY any old time with just an investment in driving time. Give LA a shot and you can always transfer closer to home if it blows.
