HighOrder Pickups

Post by wdelaney72 » Wed Aug 08, 2007 10:25 am

I received my HighOrder humbucker on Monday and got it installed and ready for a test drive. I have a Washburn Idol 66Pro that came with a Seymour Duncan Custom Custom in the bridge. While I liked the CC, I found it a limiting as it didn't cleanup particularly well. Most notably, if I ran my amp clean, the notes would still break up a bit. This led me to looking for a replacement. After seeing posts on the board from Flames about HighOrder, I decided to give Jeff a shout.

I told Jeff that I wanted an A2 pickup with a bit more output than normal, yet didn't compromise the A2 tonal characteristics. Jeff promptly replied that he doesn't like to do A2 any hotter than 9K of DC resistance... if I insisted, he'd do it, but he didn't recommend it. We settled on approx 9K. I sent him a cashier's check for $70 on 6/11 and I received my pickup on 8/6 (8 weeks turnaround) which he had initially guessed it would take 10-12 weeks.

This pickup is EVERYTHING I had hoped for. It still screams and squawks like I wanted to, yet it cleans up beautifully. It also has a much smoother, overall tone. It's perfect.

The best part of this (besides the price) is Jeff helped me get exactly what I wanted. I couldn't be more pleased.

Jeff is the man! He wound a set for my 76 three pickup custom that does everything I asked for and more. I've never had a gibson that cleans up as good as this one does. The ripping tones are awesome and have very rich harmonics and clarity. Phil

i have several highorder humbuckers.

tube tramp told me about them 4-5 years ago when jeff was getting started.

i am very pleased with every pickup jeff has wound, very good build quality, jeffs background in military electronics a big plus here no doubt.

i really like the 8.3 to 9.0k range for bridge with alnico 3 as well as alnico 2.

jeffs been helpful with magnet swapping which can give amazing results in terms of fine tuning a guitar.

the maximus is a great pickup too,one of the clearest higher gain 9.7k range pickups ever.

I've got a set of his humbuckers in an Epi Flying V and a set of his P-90s in an Agile AS820. They are great pickups, well worth the wait... 8)

It sounds like a "Custom Custom" should sound. It screams, yet cleans up beautifully.

Unfortunately, I don't have the proper goods to record sound clips. I tried a ghetto setup into my home PC, but it sounded brutal. It sucks because I have my 12xxx build with switchable gain stages that I'd love to share clips of and I can't do it!

I would get with St August to see if he has some ideas for ya.
A $99.00 Shure SM 57 would be a start.. There are others but it's a start...
If your going cheap-cheap for the computer, Soundblaster would be an interface for an A/D converter.
Would be great to hear some clips.

I'm hearing good things about these HO's Big Bang for the Buck.

I have an SM57 already. What I tried was SM57 --> TASCAM 8-track --> pc soundcard. I used the TASCAM as a preamp and went directly to my PC. Sounded like human feces... even with experimenting with all sorts of mic positions. From what I can remember, it sounded fine out of the headphone jack of the TASCAM.

Suggestions are welcome... upgrading my PC soundcard would probably be a good start. It's an eMachine, so I doubt the soundcard is very good.

recording straight into your sound card can produce very bad results.
The Mic in put on your sound card has a built in pre-amp.. so when you
send every thing thru the Tascam your pre-amping it again..

Hence .human feces.!!!
you have a basic set up now youll just need a audio interface
to convert anolog to digital and some sort of recoring soft ware
Cubase, sonar, Pro tools, Audicty its free then you can do what you want..
