FRED!
I'm diggin' these FREDs - faster diodes for the rectifier makes a big difference - check 'em out. They're different. They're like VIAGRA for yer amp. Makes it stand up in places where it used to go limp.

dude, you ought to get paid for some this research! who in the world has clips with different components demonstrating what the changes actually sound like. again, too cool.

Rob I have a question, and I hope it's not too stupid of one.
I have been pounding this electronics stuff into my head for nearly a year to make sure I have a solid grip theoretically before building an amp.
..but I notice in some of pics people have posted of vintage plexi amps
the rectifiers in some of those pics are not 4 diodes but, it looks like a black square ??
Is this a FRED diode?
and if not, what are those types of diodes ?
Oh .... and your clip Outta Love Agiin.......solid!!!!....always good stuff!!!!

coolthanks.
mine looks very similar to the pic posted in the FRED THRED.

i don't know what that rectifier set up is - maybe someone will chime in. if you find out what it is, let me know. i'm looking for a solution that is in between the slow diodes and the FREDS.the rectifiers in some of those pics are not 4 diodes but, it looks like a black square ??

The black square is just a rectifier block that functionally is the same as 4 diodes. It has two inputs that each have this mark: ~ and also has a + and a - where the + is your B+ rail going to your first filter cap, and the - is your ground. I think it's just four 1N4007 equivalent diodes in one black box....

No, these have only two leads and are 6A or 10A FRED's.

The fault almost always is sitting in front of the amp

Are you talking about Bridge rectifiers? I found out that's what the black squares are called.novosibir wrote:No, these have only two leads and are 6A or 10A FRED's.
Larry
..or what Rob is using in his current amp?
