No, but it shure do make it look purty!! (and lets face it... not all players (like 56goldtop), but most players would opt for a wicked top over a plain top if they can afford it. In the land of REAL '58-'60 LP's, the quality of the top will always rule, even over sound. Stupid, but true.)NY Chief wrote:so the killer top makes it play better?

No production guitar should cost any more than $2000 tops. After that you get into the custom built price range. I would rather pay $3000+ for a guitar that was built to my specs, built by hand by luthiers that know what they are doing and not require a fret dressing once you open the case like on most Gibson production guitars I have played in the last couple of years.
At least the Gibson custom shop knows what they are doing.

i must retort on the ephiphone bash earlyer in this post.
but first a disclaimer if i had the bucks for a gibson i would
have one hands down.
my ephiphone les paul standard has the exact playability of any
gibson les paul ive ever played. i have owned 5 or 6 gibsons in the
past but because of money problems i have sold them. i think
the main difference is the tone because of better wood. my
guitar stays in tune. i completely changed all electronics.
with that i have about $750 in this guitar. i would have to spend
$2000 or $3000 to get a gibson to beat this guitar out and look
like it to. instead i bought 3 amps a cab and 2 echoplexes.

Ive never played a gibson that plays better then my epi LPC I bought as a backup and started using all the time at gigs. Since I stopped playing a full schedule I sold nearly all the gear I didnt use much and an actual LPC went ahead of that guitar which sounded easily as good or better. I mean thats just crazy. Ive played some really shitty gibsons that still were none too cheap. Not that your average gibson wouldnt blow away your average epi but guitars are not average their finicky creatures and no 2 come out the same. I dont know that much about the process but I dont know taht gibson necessarily uses that much better tone woods. I mean of coarse they have real tops and that alone makes the guitar 2x as expensive but the mahogany slab for the body and neck? Is it that much better?

That must be a really exceptional Epi for it to be that good. I understand everyones opinions here on the subject, but I think if the run of the mill Epi was ALWAYS as good as a run of the mill Gibson, there would be a dramatic drop in price on most Gibson guitars. IMO, the Epi's lack consistency. Theres always gonna be an exception to every rule, and Im sure there are some excellent Epi's out there, just as I know that there are some really shitty Gibsons out there too. I do think, though, that if a player finds a really exceptional Gibson, theres just something about that guitar that NO overseas made guitar is gonna touch.Billy Batz wrote:Ive never played a gibson that plays better then my epi LPC I bought as a backup and started using all the time at gigs. Really, the same arguement can be made with Fenders. Some of the MIJ and even the MIM Strats are really good guitars, no doubt. But there is something about a good American made Strat that exceeds the stuff coming from overseas IMO. And BTW, remember that we're talking strictly about different types of REISSUES here. A good pre-CBS Strat, or an actual '59 LP STD has a vibe and mojo that NO reissue is gonna come even close to. The caveat here (and its a BIG caveat) is that you've gotta eliminate the cost factor from the predjudice. If they all cost the same, do you think anybody would choose a reissue ANYTHING over an original issue guitar? The cost factor is why people choose Epi's, or MIJ Strats. The supply/demand aspect, and the "holy shit, this thing just FEELS different and right" factor is why original instruments command the prices that they do. It might not seem fair, but its the way of the world.

I have 2 Gibson Les paul classics & 2 Gibson Sg 61 RI. I must have played a few dozen in various stores before I found these. They just feel and sound different than the others. I bought a LP classic guitar of the week that sounds and looks absolutely killer. But I have heard people say they su*k and would not buy one. I have friends who have epi's that they love and sound really good with a better pickup in them. Hey they are all great guitars to someone!!

+1 on that!! Ive had Gibsons that I couldnt WAIT to get rid of, and I still have a cheap shit Galveston LP shaped resonator guitar with a Firebird neck pickup that I wouldnt sell for 5 times what I paid for it!! Same with amps. I have a LOT of amps, and some that cost me a sheeeet load, but one of my favorites is a cheap Reverend Kingsnake head that just wails!! Maybe its when it doesnt cost a lot, and exceeds your expectations that it becomes really special. I guess we expect expensive stuff to sound great. Sucks when it just sounds... expensive!! Hey, BTW, Flyn, did you get to 30th St. to see that LP? I might go there either friday or saturday just to check stuff out. (G.A.S. syndrome, you know?). Matt and I go way back... he's a good friend.Flynman wrote:I have 2 Gibson Les paul classics & 2 Gibson Sg 61 RI. I must have played a few dozen in various stores before I found these. If you decide to go there say, on saturday, shoot me a PM. Maybe we'll meet up there and do some guitar B.S.-ing. (plus, Im pretty sure my wife has stuff to do that day, so its a good excuse for me to head over there!!) You really should get to Matts sometime... he has the best shop in the city, IMO. LOTS of cool guitars and amps, MUCH more than can be found around the Island, and plus, he's a great guy.Flynman wrote:Got delayed on the LIRR so I did not have time. I'm off for the rest of the week so I am going to try after Turkey day sometime. Never been to that shop I'd like to see what he has.
