Tony Iommi

Post by mwm523 » Sat Nov 24, 2007 1:50 pm

Ok, it's time to take the artists forum back from the pickers.

Iommi, considered by some to be the "Godfather of heavy metal", wrote and played some of the most famous rock riffs of all time. And his sound is HUGE.

This one has some great closeups of his prostheitc fingertips. How the hell does he play with those things??

Can't argue with that... Bill really punishes the drum kit in those clips!

Damn. Ozzy made it to the third line before he screwed up the lyrics. Iommi does kick out some serious tone.

Big powerful sound. I used to crank Sabbath first thing in the morning before school after the parents left.

There's a 2006 clip of War Pigs on Stage6 and the sound is HUUUUGE! Worth a look.

Tony is defanantly the god father 8) Tony is a BIG influence of mine.

Kirk Windstien from DOWN said that the rest of the guys in the band laughed at him for using Fast Fret string lube. Then when they went on tour with Heaven and Hell, they saw that Tony uses it too. "See. The GODFATHER uses it, so thats good enough". I guess they quit laughing at him.

Hail Tony

BTW, I wonder how hard it'd be to build a clone of a Laney Supergroup? Arent they similar to the older 100 watt marshalls?

I never heard that one, but It wouldnt suprise me. I read in a book somewhere that Tony used to bully Ozzy back when they were in school. Ozzy said Tony was a prick

VERY similar to a JTM50 except with 250pF mixer bypass cap, 100pF bright cap on the bright vol pot and split cathodes on V1 - each using 1k5/25uF

The biggest part of the tone is those Partridge transformers, luckily Mercury Mags make clones.

However, these amps are still available for around the same price as any kit (maybe even cheaper) so I don't see the point from a financial view.

I used to have a topmount 60w Supergroup head - great amp and surprisingly did the Cream thing very well.

The later 60w Supergroup with the head mounted on the bottom of the chassis like a JTM45 has more headroom and is crisper sounding. That's the one I still own. Oh, and its LOUD too - they don't break up as early as Marshalls.

Ive seen em pop up on e-bay, but never really pated attention to the selling prices of them. I'd like to have one someday. I've listened to some kick ass sounding live Sabbath stuff from back in the day. Even with some of the bad recordings, you can tell those were some great amps.
