Do you guys leave your back panel on?

Saw a thread over at PP and wondered what the consensus was. Do the heads run that hot?

I have mine off because I'm lazy and haven't cut one out yet :D I built my head box from scratch out of scraps...

Mine runs really cool...maybe that's because I don't have a back on it though

Hey--------------------->Off and with a fan blowing into each headbox. Easier to access and less heat build up etc. Keeping the heat down on the trannies and glass cannot hurt.

Cheers,

Eric

I'm not a big EVH nut like most here but I do remember a pic here a while back of Eddies amps at a concert (like 8 of them or something) and I pretty sure I remember the backs being off all of them. Then there is that pic of him and the band recording in that studio and his amp is on the floor with the back off. So Eddie approves of the backs being off. :D

Off. I still tinker with pre tubes.

+1 and I have seen the same as well.

I do think that they serve as a nice bit of armor when you play small clubs and are moving your amps in and out of a small van in hurry. Tubes can get hit bumped etc. I use a Tuki cover for the heads and the back panel on when I gig. However, in the safety and comfort 8) of the studio they get to have panels off, personal electric fans and enjoy a climate controlled tempertaure of 67 degrees year around :D Life is so hard for them..LOL!

If you are touring large venus and have a well paid personal staff you can afford leaving them off. Somewhere I have seen Joe Perry use Major 100's out of the headbox altogether..at a show.

Cheers,

Eric

I leave mine off for cooling, I swap pre tubes around, I haul one of two 45 builds around with no case [cabinet] I have a cabinet on order for it, I know I am taking my chances, it is loaded with old stock tubes,Mullards, etc, just one bump on these tubes and they would be history  but damn this amp sounds good, I cant resist taking it to my gigs.

I do remember now seeing a video with Jimmy Page in the old days (late 60s) and the camera get's just enough around were you can barely see it but the back is off a Marshall Major. Probably a necessity more than anything. I think those things heat up bad?

+1!!! I whole heartedly agree! If Page does it then it is good enough for me! EVH doing it didn't have me sold but Page!!!! Yes! I see he also is using what seems to be 4 Orange or Matamps and 2 Marshalls and I can't make out what those other two are. The front panels go all the way across. But I do see those 100watt plexi Marshalls on tope of the Zoso cab. The one on top is a 67 or 68 with a laydown and the power caps inside. I don't see the large electrolytic can setting next to the far end EL34. Can't see the other one setting behind the ECC83 either. Nice! But that don't mean nothing. Eric has a 69 with all the caps on top and he has dead on Page tone, best I ever heard other than Page. And he is using SD PUPS! Damn! Must be that U87!? :D
