FYI, I can't take it no more! I'm pulling out!
This is just a little FYI for anyone thinking about making the most stupid decision they could possibly ever make. As of today I am officially and forever removing Windows Vista from my computer and putting in XP Pro. I am floored and in awe that MS would put this sack of dung out. I have given it 11 months and it has been 11 months of "This doesn't work with anything" hell. Gotta let her go. The fancy new computer I bought came with Vista so that is why I used it first. Pure hell!

I just bought a new Dell laptop that came with xp. I haven't heard anything good about vista yet. Incompatible drivers with older hardware and older versons of some software. Transferring large files is supposed to take forever . Windows shortcut keys have been changed around: WIndows key + E used to take you to windows explorer, on Vista it reboots the system.I"ll just stay with xp for a few more years

I've been running Leopard since the week it was released. No worries at all. It even comes with "Boot Camp" if I want ... for some odd reason ... to run Windows at the same time.

+1 For Vista BAN!
Working at Best Buy for 3 years has granted me a lot of chances to see the plights of the PC. Even though most of the problems are related to user neglect, Vista is the worst epidemic on the PC so far. On paper, it looked great! Best Buy attempted to brainwash us with the power of this new OS, but only time would tell. What's funny is how much it ripped off Mac's OSX!!
My parents bought a top of the line Gateway gaming PC with Vista about 5 months back. They have to hard-reboot their computer three times a day because it locks up all the time. They really don't do any stupendous things with their computer either. They use it mostly as a media center and communications hub. They already want a Mac!
It's great how people are demanding a downgrade from Microsoft. When has this ever happened in history! I've been using XP SP2 for a while on my laptop and run very heavy programs like Adobe CS2, Catia, and SolidEDGE. Never had a problem. The kinks are worked out! Only reason I want to switch to a Mac is because it's more of a creative tool, things are simpler, better built, and the service is great.
I too can't wait to get my 24" iMac next December

hmmmm
Not so easy!
My new Gateway won't let me install XP Pro. Stuck with Shitsta until i get this sorted out.
Now don't get me wrong. This wasn't meant to incite the MAC crowd into attacking PCs. Let me get this straight. My studio computer is a beast. I've had it 3 years and it has never ever ever hiccuped. Even when friends MACs have the once and a while crash, my studio computer has never hiccuped once. I will go to my grave swearing that my PC (not all PCs) but just my PC for music will kill a MAC. I built it myself and did tons of research on which parts work best with each other, studied part compatability and everything you could imagine. It is mean!
I'm just saying that Vista is the worst thing to ever happen. I'll never switch to MAC due to the wonderful experience my Studio PC has given me. But it took some work to figure out how to build the ultimate PC for Audio. And yes! She was a little pricey but still not as pricey as the most expensive mac in the same catagory.
At present I am thinking of upgrading the 74GB Raptor drives in the studio PC with some of those new 10000RPM 150GB Raptor Drives. Those weren't available at the time I built her.

I'm not touching Vista any time soon myself. I waited to use XP Pro until well past SP1. Now we have 5 comps running here at the shop, all with XP Pro SP2. Things are generally well behaved.
I usually have to shut down the network once a month and reboot everything. Otherwise, it's 24/7.
Did I ever post the specs on my recording computer I put together? It's a screamer:
Asus P5B Deluxe
Q600 quad core
4 gig or Corsair Ram
(2) WD Raptor 74G drives
(2) WD 500g drives
Take 4 rack case

Yes, to hell with Vista.
If I remember correctly, you've got one of those new Mackie Onyx Boards as well?
I was looking at the Onyx 1640 and the possibility of sending 16 individual tracks straight to the computer looked mighty enticing. Really want to wait and hear more about it, though, especially what kind of requirements a guy would need on the PC end of things.
Cheers
Cool. What else, if you don't mind, in the way of details, such as recording software, interface, etc. . .VelvetGeorge wrote:

Sure. I use Nuendo for recording/editing/mixing etc. It's on version 4.
My interface is RME Multiface II. And I have a UAD-1 powered plug ins card.
I have the Mackie board but I haven't tried using the Firewire inputs to record any tracks. I'd check out the mackie forum to see if the driver was updated, I recall there were some issues.
I think the Mackie and Reaper would be a great combo.
