One's Choice of Top Ten Guitars

Post by yngwie308 » Fri Jan 11, 2008 9:42 pm

This gentleman has picked among others Willie Nelson's N20 Martin and Brian May's Red Special, as his top ten guitars of all time.
With respect under Les Pauls I would add Greeny and under Strats, Jimi's favorite blackie..

I agree with most of that list, but 2 of Jerry Garcia guitars?? I think one JG guitar would have been enough, and really... Trey's "The Languedoc"?? That coulda been left out too.
How ANY one of Jimi's guitars didnt get in there, along with David Gilmours #0001 Strat is a good question. IMO, WAAAAY more significant than a "Languedoc" or either of those Garcia guitars. Maybe cause Andrew Olson is a builder those custom one-offs have a greater significance to him.
Plus, #8 pretty much gets filed under the shameless self-plug heading. :? :? :?

yngwie,

What???

How many Gold or Platinum Hits were made with those custom guitars?
Not that thats a bench mark for a players list, but Where's Chuck 335,
Where is Eddie's Cochran and VH's guitar? where is John l and Georg H's
guitar? No famous tele? The list could go on and on. IMO.

No doubt... so is the thread gonna begin here?? If you won a contest where you could have ANY 10 guitars of your choice, no restriction on cost, famous ownership, etc... what or whose would they be???

Mine:
1-Jimi's Woodstock Strat.
2-Duanes Fillmore East Darkburst LP
3-A black 1964 Gibson Firebird V
4-A pre-war 12 fret Martin D-45
5-David Gilmours 1954 #0001 Strat
6-A 1929 National Style 4 Tricone (roundneck)
7-A 1950 Fender Broadcaster
8-A non-cutaway D'Angelico New Yorker Round Soundhole Archtop
9-George Harrisons Rosewood Tele
10-A 1959 Gibson ES-345 (non-stereo, non-varitone)

11-(cause EVERYTHING should go to 11)-Billy Gibbons Pearly Gates LP

Obviously, MANY other guitars could make this list, but these came to mind first. (actually, maybe I could just expand my list to about 20, and that would work for me...   )

Is it wrong for me to want Bruce Springsteen's Tele?
Angus Young's SG
Malcolm Young's Gretsch.
One of Ace Frehley's Les Pauls.

I would have the Languadoc and Garcia guitar, but not before EVH and Jimi's guitars.

For me:
1. Yngwie's 1972 Strat "The Duck"

2. Jimi Hendrix's Black Stratocaster

3. Peter Green's 1959 Les Paul Standard "Greeny", but before Gary Moore had it, , ie; broken headstock, wrong knobs, ect. sorry GM

4. Robert Johnson's original guitar

5. Ledbelly's Stella 12 string- slide monster.

6. John Cippolina's Les Paul/SG

7.Tommy Bolin's main Strat

8. Terry Kath's SG

9. Rory Gallagher's original Strat

10. Leslie West's original Les Paul Junior- already had two '54's and they are the best :D
These are just ten off the top of my head.Note: no custom mades or Jerry Garcia axes here

These kinds of lists always have huge swings to one persons style and favors.

What about Lucille or Django's Maccafferi. Im not a huge fan of those players but an average but I recognize they should be up before half the guitars on that list from a history of guitar music kind of way.

That's why it's geat to have one's own opinion Dan, sure Django's guitar is hot, there isn't one Lucille as far as I know, what are your top ten off the top of your head? I'm certainly not going to list a EVH Destroyer or Black and White, actually I think I covered a broad spectrum of music that I listen to, Segovia isn't known for a particular guitar or Paco deLucia.
Artists that have a certain special guitar that they are identified with and one that instantly sounds the same most times.

Sub out #10, and sub in Jimi's Black Flying V and your list is beat, JD!!  (other than that, it IS hard to beat!!) 8) 8) (for ME, I could also do without PM's Hofner bass, and sub in Johnny Winters white Firebird V, but thats just my preference... I know PM's bass is more important historically, but I dont play bass, and I love Firebirds, so...)
