Yes, clips please! I'm going to try an alnico 8 in my mid 70's super distortion and mighty mite. I finally hooked up my 2003 SD EVH and put it into an ash strat, the only thing missing is that slight hardness to the notes that you hear in Edwards early tone. The alnico2 is just too spongy.

I tried it out today with my Super Distortion, took the Alnico 5 from one of my duncans and was pleasantly surpised. Though, now I'm curious with some of my other pickups what they would sound like with alnico 2's, I tried looking at Stew-mac but all they had were fives, who is another supplier? BTW, I highly recommend this mod, smooths things out quiet a bit. Thx.

I dont think that Jim's magnets fit other brands of pickups....Jim himself said that "The mags are custom cut for WCR and don't work/fit in others".

Unless he has changed this with the new year.....

TRY HERE:
http://www.magnetichold.net/alnico.htm

Then go this form, fill out what dimensions you want the bar, and call them up:
http://www.magnetichold.net/pdfs/alnico_order.pdf

I know its a little scientific to figure it out, but you can get Alnico 2,3,5,8 - basically the standard guitar mags.....

I hope this helps.

Unless he has changed this with the new year.....
i have had many pickups and have pulled many magnets out.
all of the nagnets i have seen are the same size in humbucking pickups. sure some maybe be thicker but thats about all the variable Ive seen.

Well, thats good to know...maybe Jim's are slightly different dimensions and to avoid people ordering the mags and then complaining about slight variations of size....also there is a "return customer only" policy on magnets from WCR....most likely to avoid people from stripping Jim of all his magnets!

FWIW, I liked the Darkburst pickup better than the JB one in the last thread that you did sound clips in - it just sounded more 'right' than the JB for that amp....nice work.

i have swapped magnets in my darkburst as well. its a standard sized magnet. the darkburst is no different in its magnet size compared to.. a dimarzio PAF. some ceramic magnets that come in higher gain pickups are thicker but their length and width remain the same.

my point is you can use any magnet from any humbucker and put it another humbucker. they are the same size.

sure the spacers may have be changed as well if you go to thicker or thiner magnet or visa versa but going from alnico 2,3,4,5,6,7,8 u wont have that problem.

further more if needed you could make your own spacers and most times the spacers that come with the thicker magnets can be turned on their side to accommodate the thinner magnet and as well the thinner spacers can be turned to accommodate the thicker magnets.

Slightly off topic but I wish there was some kind of seminar for all the stuff you guys do and talk about. a sort of...oh I dunno...Amp Camp for a week or two. Supplemental material given out before hand with homework to be done before arriving. Basic circuitry and wiring. Then upon arrival there would be lessons on how to solder, and discussions of various mods and variations. A basic soldering class and lessons how to do things like change magnets in pickups...on and on. I realize that reading this forum enough is the education I am talking about, but I like to be more hands on. It keeps me from getting too lazy about it all! Or maybe a series of dvds? Sigh...just dreaming.....
