OK Billy and anyone else interested. I stuck the 6550s in and got a little breakin time and rerecorded another Who Knows. This is the same settings as the EL34 clip only with a lot more attenuation and the mic was a bit farther away. I dont know but listen to them both then to Who Knows. I think this is it. Really Im convinced at this point. Totally has that glassy quality now even though not quite as much as the album but maybe I just need to crank it a little. Its pretty quiet here.
Sorry for the radio station noise. I live close by to a tower farm with 10 1,000 foot radio and TV towers. Its tough playing single coils around here. Ive been looking into shielding the guitar cavity. Anyway.

Yeah. This is the opposite from where I started. I did not want to believe the split+6550 stuff. And to be honest I still prefer the Bass or JTM kind of amps. Im not sure if I want to stick with 6550s but I have to say, I had them in a 2203 a few years back. It was a great amp but it never was what I was after even after I put 34s in it. But they do have their own mojo. A bit stiff, sure. A bit harsh when cranked, maybe. But that glassy top still is cool especially with the vibe goin and that deep quality when you crank em.

Yeah man, you are like, a hair away from BoG! The 6550's have the glassiness and the depth that the el's don't have. They sound like they have a togetherness that El's lose when their cranked.
Killer man, even if you don't stick with them you can always go back, and now you know the result.

I thought the amp sounded outstanding! I think its almost a much of a tone mystery as EVH tone legends whether or not Jimi had 6550's in his amps. I've read a few accounts and they said he had them installed in lieu of EL-34's for what ever reasons.
I can hear it that specific crisp glassiness the EL-34 don't have, put that new KR fuzz in front lets hear it Dan!
Was that those Shuguang GE6550A clones from Doug?

Yes. And I biased them as high as I could go which could be 75mA. Theyre holding up.
I dont think that West Coast Tech guy who talked about the 6550 thing is a legend. I mean either you think he's telling the truth or he's lying and what motivation is there to lie about that. I mean tahts bringing the whole EVH frame of mind to Hendrix. Now the 6550 guy may be right but that doesnt guarantee he always used them but as for BoG I let my ears do the talking which led me from the complete opposite argument. And its not like the VH guys where you may get a similar result coming from several different directions. My gear and settings are all as stock as you can make them.
Remember Im not recording on an unattenuated full stack for one. IME that would tend to make your low end boomy and high end even more glassy. Plus I have no Filmore acoustics
Or vintage recording gear.

are the scumbacks much better than the c1230-55s for hendrix?Billy Batz wrote:I dont know Ive always used H30-55Hz. Ive been using Weber 1230-55s with the pre rola treatment for a few years but I put a few Scumback H55s in last week. Theyre closer then I thought they would be but the H55s are my speaker definitely.

I really need more time with them. Ive only played them at low volume where theyve only been a bit darker which is always welcome with Marshalls imo. In the end I suspect its the same deal. They will respond very similar cranked but any extra bit of highend rolloff Ill always take because these amps with the volume 6-7ish they can be awfully trebly.
