I thing PING are the only officially liscenced, exact OFR copy, IIRC.
Try to find an old Kramer, good luck or Hamer, with an original FR.
It has been well know that the harder metal first Floyds are best and yes replace the nut too, I did!

I'm gonna get flamed for this, but I have a guitar with a genuine Floyd, and a guitar with a Floyd Licensed copy, and the copy sounds BETTER than the original. I firmly believe that even though the genuine Floyd operates more smoothly and lasts longer, the copy produces a better tone. The genuine Floyd sounds so thin. It really seems to lack low-end.

The only difference between these two guitars is that the Original Floyd is on a guitar with an Alder body, while the copy is on a basswood body. Both guitars have the same model bridge pickup...

Great TL though the majority of copies do sound worse than the originals.
Gary Moore even said in the eighties that he preferred the tone of the chrome plated ones over the black anodized.
I and many others found the metal used in the copies to be less than the originals.
The EVH EB MM uses a Gotoh copy I believe, so they can't be that bad.
I just like OFR's better.

I like both, but the origional black iodized on my '87 Kramer Baretta seemed to be a tad denser maybe. The new 'OFR' reissue I got on my Warmoth is every bit as good, and I see it lasting a long time. The 80's origionl models may be TOO durable, almost to a fault. I was listening to some older stuff I tracked with my baretta (it got nicked a few yrs back). I could hear the immediate sound that is inate to the FR, only it was tinnier and tinkier sounding. The new ones strike a better balance in my opinion.

I have a love/hate thing going on with Floyds. Back in the 80's, I used one because my influences were using them (EVH,Lynch,DeMartini,Vai,etc). At the same time, I was also aware of how HARD it was to cop other player's tones (Schenker,Roth),using one. I stopped using the locking trems. for a while, after 'finding' my voice,so to speak on a strat. A few yrs ago I got the itch to go the Floyd route again,so I built a Warmoth. Being honest, in most respects,the Warmoth totally out performs either a stock Fender or Gibson, but its that unique tone and timbre of a stock strat,that allows me to be content. Its like Ritchie Blackmore said yrs ago,about how a strat is harder to play,but when played right,rewards one with great tone.

good points guys. i'm sure i could pick one guitar that was the most "universal" for me, but there's a variety of guitars that i might pick for specific purposes. the floyd has a place too.

Ritchie probably got that comment from Jeff Beck who has been qouted saying almost the identical thing.

Ok now that we are still on tonage floyds and all, what is the deal with those wolfie guitars?? I can not stand the tone from that guitar why in the world did he ditch the musicman EBMM My opinion is a fine sounding guitar with the floyd.
By the way I put a huge brass block on my floyd copy and in stalled a Tone zoner she sounds Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreat! No more thin sounding she rocks!

A overwound P.A.F ? Not sure what that Dimarzio is. I personally dislike Ed's "production" guitars (To me, after playing them)after the Kramer thing. The Baretta's weren't his EXACT design, but close enough. I like his Franky, and his Black and yellow guitars best. From a design point of view (Hard ash,strat body,hb'er, and later, F.Rose)those guitars sounded, and felt right for his (EVH) vibe.

Dimarzios Tone Zone nice pup indeed!! And about ed productions nothing will beat the EB-musicman. I'm sorry thats one nice guitar,compaired to the wolf gang to me is a train wreck in tone and looks my opinion.
The Neck on that was one of Eds favorite neck computerized replica and all where made identical, shit even the cheap ass OLPS where a bargin MM1F, they came out of box setup and ready to play. Now they no longer make EBMM gave up the licenses on them. I'm sure they got sick and tired of people compairing these to there cash cow Hog!! LOL

I am not a floating trem player for my taste, I like flush mount Floyds for the reason of better tonal transfer and sustain.

The Gotoh Floyds are awesome as well, Suhr uses them and I have one on my nos 1993 Washburn SS100. I was told the metal on these is harder than the OFR's themselves!!

I've been saying that for years. My guitars look like they are complete unfinished prototypes. Everyones like " Thats what your playing now?" Then they try them out and go..."WTF....under $350.00?". They have their $2500 PRS's or Ibanez's latest japan thing going....side by side....they totally suck.

Northern ash body, 62 Fender bridge, maple cap'd neck with 6100 frets, various single humbuckers in the slanted bridge positon.

Just cant beat it!
