some of you guys might think i'm crazy, but i'm considering re-topping my 86 LP standard!

i originally ordered a 59 reissue in 87 but was incorrectly quoted the standard price and went with it because at 17, i wasn't really in a position to spend $500 more. but it always kinda' bothered me; i wanted that bookmatched top!

so, over twenty years later i can now afford to buy a new one, but frankly they all play like crap compared to my now beat up standard! plus, they're WAY overpriced and i think the quality has gone down.

anyway, do any of you guys know anyone who might do this sort of work?

Try Lay's in OH or possibly Ed Roman in NV. Maybe RS Guitarworks. Classic Ax in Nashville also.

I'm in no way affiliated with any of them.

Jack has worked on 1959 Bursts, '58 Goldtops, D-45 Martins and my guitars, he is a true master luthier and an incredibly nice and reasonable guy.

Sorry I can't help you with your question. Have you tried R8's? That is if you can live without flame. They are much more reasonably priced. Whatever you do, post pics of it. An '87 doesn't hold a vintage value, so I don't see any big reason not to retop it, other than the cost.

There is that guy from Stuwart Mcdonald that does work... but you will be without the guitar for a while....
