Custom Shop 69 Strat
Can someone please tell me why some of the models have that notch on the headstock where the truss rod is and some dont? Did any 69 strats even have a plug there? How is one supposed to drop 2700 bucks and not be sure what they're getting.

Rob, I've only seen that on the Fender catalogue. The ones I played didnt have that. Now the early to mid '71's have that, but they are a one piece skunk striped neck.
I would say order a '69, BUT, it is taking a slight chance. Maybe try and go to the Charlotte guitar show the last weekend of this month. You probably wont find a white or black late 60's maple board strat, even if you had the money to buy one though, cause of the Hendrix association.
Even 70's 'player' strats are going for around $2000 and up. The '68 reissues are even going for more than they sold for.

I didn't think that surround of the truss rod adjustment hole was that pronounced as that for '69.
I have been closely looking at these CS '69's and there are a lot of discrepancies believe me.

Like two of them can be completely different as far as playability, there is a wider variance in the quality of these, than say a CS '56 or a more vintage style Strat, for some reason.
Actually the '66 Strat from a few years back is just as awesome, from the examples I've seen.
Almost everyone who has a CS '69, that I have read, tried at least others before settling on the one they liked.
With a special order, you can't return it beacuse you don't like it, at least with GC anyway.
I would try and buy one from an established dealer for that money than buy one sight unseen.
I found large spec variances in the description of the Trower Strats, some descriptions said it had a 9.5" radius, others the 7.25", ect.
I would love to have a CS Duck obviously, with it's shallower scallops, but for me the money is stupid.
In the future I plan on converting a 3-bolt to 4 bolt for a project Strat, while theyare still under $5K

Yeah, I agree Dave, those CS '69's are TOTALLY dependant on the luthier who makes them, and Fender's CS has about 30 I think. The sun burst I played was really, really good, but, the black one my wife had orderered not only didnt sound that good, its lamenated fretboard was wrong. It wasnt an exact round lam, but sorta in between a round lam and a slab. the top of the fretboard was 7 1/4, but the part where the fretboard was glued to the neck seemed a little flatter. It just wasnt totally accurate. I've played real deal examples, and in my opinion, on average the Jap '68's had vintage correct necks. My Musikraft neck is too. Wih the Fender CS, it seems to be inconsistant.

Honestly, truss rod plug or not,for $2700 I'd wait to play one first.Strats IMHO are all differant.
For instance A freind of mine had a $1500 Clapton model and honestly I have a cheapo Squier that sounds better.
