He IS a slide killer, but in his prime, Johnny Winter woulda kicked his ass. (but thats like saying in his prime, Muhammed Ali woulda kicked Mike Tysons ass... we'll never know). :? :?
Johnny invented it and woulda killed Sardinas. But, Sardinas is excellent.
I really like the Nat Tricone cutaway but even that's a couple of bucks...
Ill tell you what sounds even better than the cutaway Tricone, is the steel bodied Resorocket. That single cone design, with the tricone lattice work for soundholes really kicks major ass with a steel body. They're also a little cheaper than Tricones. A Tricone has longer sustain and a more midrangy tone than a single cone, but its not as loud as a single cone. The Resorocket has LOTS of volume and just a raw "nastiness" to it. National Resophonic will make any kind of custom idea you can come up with. I always thought a steel body Resorocket (maybe nickel plated) with a bound Tricone neck would really be the shit. Great stuff!! 8) 8) 8)

The newer Nats have a fairly chunky profile, but not TOO big. Probably around the size of a '59 reissue LP, but maybe slightly wider at the nut. Im pretty sure they're around 1 3/4" wide at the nut, at least for the Tricone. I think the Resorocket is about the same. The nice thing is that new Nats all sound good... its not like buying a Martin where some sound good, and some sound outstanding, so you're left with sorting thru a bunch of them. I've never seen a bad sounding new Nat. 8) 8)

While saving up funds for an original 20s National I did some research and found this little guy:

http://www.bryansmusic.com/JM991E.htm

Didn't buy it from there but that's the model. It's a Johnson tricone resonator. Brass body, rosewood neck... it sounds amazing. There's a mod called the "mushroom mod" I believe where you can knock out one of the supporting braces and move another one inside to have the same structure as a National. It really makes it open up and ring a lot more. It's a fantastic tone, solid as a rock with great craftsmanship and about 1/4 the price of a national if you're looking for something to hold you over.

Also, if you buy replacement national cones for it I swear it gets ever so close to the real thing.

Just something to think about.

Some metal for y'all. My group of slide bad-asses.

Three silver bad-boys. On the left is a '30 steel bodied Style O, maybe the rawest sounding Nat I've ever heard. Elmore James all the way.
The middle guitar is a '32 brass body Style O, much more mellow, kinda like Lightnin' Hopkins tone.
The guitar on the left is an early Continental Tricone (with Nat decal). It has a body made of actual silver, and Nat "Hot Rod" cones. Its everything a great Tricone should be--a raw, yet complex tone with an awesome natural reverb to it.

The 1930 steel Steel Style O. Raw and loud as they get.

Brass 1932 Style O. Softer and more sophisticated than the '30.

The Conti Tricone. Not as loud as a single cone, but way more overtones and midrange/high end-complexity.
