How many guitars in studio

Post by Guitar-Sam » Thu Oct 23, 2008 5:45 pm

How many Electric guitars do you guys bring to recording sessions??
I have to leave tommarow night for Nashville,Tenn. For a week or so worth of recording with my band. This will be my first time working with a producer,so I'm a bit of a noob.
Generaly I'm a one guitar kinna guy I play my Strat all night unless I break a string, then I finish the set with a backup then change string and back to the strat.
I have 4 Electrics:
1975 strat which is my main guitar now(69' CS Abby pickups).
1979 strat(dimarzio singles)but it is apart at the moment cause I want to refret the original neck eventualy. Not to mention I'm probably gonna sell the replacement neck that was on it to pay a couple bills.
Stock HSS Squier strat which is OK but not the best sounding thing in the world for recording.
And an old MIJ 70s Epiphone which sounds like a Les Paul, but I don't really like the tone, too bassy for me.
IMO the 75 strat is best sounding on all the songs we will be recording.I'm just worried the producer may want differant sounds but I've been a strat only guy so long I don't really like any other guitars?

Welcome to NashVEGAS!! Come on in, the water's fine  ...just don't be let down... this isn't exactly "music city".

I record guitars in my home studio/tracking room, so I've got everything right there. I can tweak mic placement, switch out cabinets, guitars and amps at will. (...drums and vocals in the studio)

More importantly, I use the guitars I want to hear on each song/part. For the next CD that means my main strat on 90% of the tunes, a '56 Gold Top on one tune and a Gibson B25 acoustic on one tune.

Don't let the producer neuter (spay) you!!!! Nashville loves to homogenize. I don't know who's calling the shots in your situation; but, if at all possible... Don't let the producer neuter (spay) you!!!! Unless you're looking to get session work here, there is no reason to suck up to a producer who may or may not know anywhere near as much as you do about guitar tone and/or what will or won't work when mix time comes.

And did I mention: Don't let the producer neuter (spay) you!!!! The CD racks are full of highly promoted guitar players who sound like that other guitar player. Just my 2 cents...

Just bring one guitar. He has no choice but to let you use that one!

He'll probably try to bring in some other guitars for you to play, go along with it but, decline them. Tell him they just don't feel right to you.

Oh and believe me I like my tone but I definetly don't know more than these guys.
I think I'm gonna bring my 75 strat and the HSS strat and my head/cab and my tonesuckers(pedals  ).
I just got a,night befor the road,"I suck,I'm not good enough"complex going on here. LOL

You sound like a good-hearted fellow and are probably a great player like many here. That's admirable. However, if you are too nice they will not only have you playing guitars, amps and everything else they brought along or have on hand (can be good or bad)... ...but they may also be whispering to your band buddies that "they know of this great guitarist that would be a perfect fit". Always keep an eye on your back. It's a drag but it's the business and it's reality.

Also, if you guys are at all interested in retaining copyright/ownership of your own music make sure you get the producer, engineer, etc. to sign a Work for Hire Agreement before anyone plays a lick!! If you don't and you start to make money off the recordings... they can lay claim to more of it than you think.

Be confident and have a great time, here in sunny NashVEGAS!!

I normally bring 2-3 guitars.-if one doesn't work the next might work. also, a different guitar will tend to change your playing style

Don't forget Jeff Beck wanted to play the Strat on the Blow By Blow album but George Martin insisted he use the Les Paul. Seemed to work out OK....

Beleive me I found that out the hard way befor.I was in a group with two guitars, the leader wanted to get rid of the other guitarist and after I talked him out of it and saved the guys @ss. the other guitarist stabbed me in the back and I was the one let go.Nice huh??
I don't think that will be an issue here though.I'm also singer and 60%+ songwritter.
I leave in a couple hours,I'm just gonna roll with it and see what happens.I put my 79 back together and I'm bringing my two old strats. If I have to play other gear I'll try it but if I play like crap(AKA worse than normal LOL)I will say something.

My suggestion to you is to take what you are comfortable with. If the recording studio is a foreign environment for you, you will want to have what makes you most comfortable.

I make my living doing this. I have a trunk with a dozen guitars that gets delivered to whatever studio I'm working at. Generally a rack of amps, two or three cabs, and a pedalboard. Sometimes a track just cries out for certain tones. Nice to have the options at hand.
Then there are the sessions that can't afford that stuff, and I take 3 or 4 guitars, a small board, and an amp, usually a Deluxe or Princeton... sometimes a head and 1x12 cab. Oh, and I always take my own headphones.

It's a different world under the phones, and can be intimidating to folks that don't do it all the time. Hopefully you will have a good engineer and producer that will do their best to put you guys at ease.

Well.................LOL........I didn't end up using EATHER.Both my strats had bad 60 cycle hum not evan a hum eliminater would eliminate and I ended up using a strat with lace sensors to record all my rythms.I'm doing the overdubs with my guitars though,we are in another studio and the girls are behaving there.Funny cause both are fully shielded. Hum?? :?

Now here's a bigass black hole, yah?
Depending on the the paid time in the studio I would say Strat/Les Paul would cover the bases but... they're just like a woman... what's your flava ! hehe

Well I'm back home. And things ended up going great and pre-trip anxiousness aside I ended up leaving, having made some really good freinds and CD.I was actually sad to leave TN and plan on making(many if possible)return trips.
