57' & 62' strat pickup Q's
When did fender start beveling the magnets on the 57' 62' RI pickups?
I have a 57' 62' I bought in about 1996 and it has regular non-beveled magnets.It also ohms at 6.2K which is allot hotter than Fender rates the new 57' 62' which is rated at 5.6K.
Is there a tone differance between the beveled and non beveled?

I can't compare the old withe the new ones as i only own a set of 57/62s (non-beveled) that came with my '57 RI i bought back on 1993 ('91 production)...but your DC res readings are identical to mine, all 3 pups read 6.2K...strange thing is that according to Fender's specs these should read 5.8K as well..
On the other hand Fender claims that CS69 sould read 5.8K...still, i own 2 sets of these and they read from 5.35K to 5.55K maximum...

I think they reworked it around ´98 or so, and renamed it "American Vintage ´57/’62 Stratocaster" and thats when they started bevelling the magnets...? For what it´s worth: The pickups in my ´64 is in the 6,16 to 6,25 range.

6.2K for 57/62 looks correct according to this: http://www.provide.net/~cfh/pickups.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Ding, ding, ding........I think we have a winner. I bought my 57 Re-issue in 2000 and the guy I bought it from was bragging about how Fender recently made some changes including the beveled mag's, so it was fairly recent. I would say late 1990's for sure.MacGaden wrote:I think they reworked it around ´98 or so, and renamed it "American Vintage ´57/’62 Stratocaster" and thats when they started bevelling the magnets...? Those 57/62 pickups are totally under-rated btw......

Ah.........see I knew a good old fashioned wise @ss comment would get the posts flowin'.....LOL
So 6.2K is about right for the older ones.Thats good to know.
I have two now my first which ohms 6.2 and another I bought on ebay last week dead and I repaired it,measures 5.85K with about a couple hundred winds removed.
Freedom I also had a set of CS69 strat pups mine ohm'ed from 5.40K-5.63K much less than fender claims them to be.
These older 57/62s seem to have a similar sound to the 69s,look to have the same purple winding wire too.
