Mike Matthews strikes again

Post by Gtr_tech » Thu Jul 21, 2005 9:50 pm

Rumor has it that New Sensor has aquired the rights to yet another famed tube trade name. I guess we're not supposed so say just what it is yet, but it involves some sort of colored animal. Do the math.....

maybe it says the superficial elements go a long way in marketing. "Mullard", "Tung-Sol", "Amperex", "Bugle Boy", "Drake", "Dagnall", "mustard", "LCR" and on and on... Heck I wouldn't care if they called a tube Yurigagarinpochinskyulyanov 5xgammaPi3.4, as long as it was kick ass.

It's sort of funny in that Matthews has managed to be hated more than Pittman! At least Aspen is trying to offer quality (at a possibly inflated price). These anticks make me want to avoid New Sensor products...

If they were matched they would just be a good/typical Russian El34.
There's nothing wrong with Russian Tubes, I like some Russian Tubes,
but they ain't no XF2s baby.

Gold Lion KT88s

Post by Shredder » Sat Jul 30, 2005 4:21 pm

I had read on the TubeDepot website that the Gold Lion KT88s were going to be reissued by Western Electric (top 'o the line company) and made in the USA, not New Sensor Russian rubbish!!!

Those Mullard reissue won't work (red plate/even melte...) at relatively high B+, I tried 4 quads and first off they were not matched properly than they would sound real sweet but after 10hrs they would just fail (with a B+ 500...), didn't try them at lower voltage maybe there ok at 450-475 range hopefully!!!!

New Sensor Tubes Suck

Post by Shredder » Sun Jul 31, 2005 11:07 am

I bought some of those Tung Sol 6550 clones for my Dynaco home stereo amps, and after two months, there's almost no getter left on the sides of the tubes (indicating high gas from poor materials and/or vacuum leaks). I'll never buy their junk again-also had one tube in a quad of their Genalex KT-66 clones burn on me too (also known as GT KT-66HP). However, they did sound good when new, but they just don't last.

That's weird. I've been running a quad of Sovtek KT88's in my Dynaco Mark III clones with no problems for two years. They're still matched and test good. 500+ volts on plates, increased filtering, solid state rectification and NO standby switch! Go figure!

Yes...Groove tubes are seriously inflated...As we all know...All Aspen does is buy millions of tubes and ehhmmm match them wink,wink...They do not manufacture any tubes whatsoever!!

Yes, they do manufacture 6CA7's and 6L6's.

RE: Groove Tubes - even though they use outside assembly for the GE repro 6L6 and 6BA7, they do some of the preliminary work in house. Plus they do have some exclusive designes, like the E34L made by JJ and the GT12AX7-M made in China.

They have done a lot to raise the consiousness of guitarist as relating to tubes and tone.

Would I buy their relabled preamp tubes? Except for the exclusive GT-12ax7-M, as a rule no. There available from other outlets under the original brand names at a decent savings.

With power tubes, you're really paying for their matching process, I personaly don't buy power tubes from them, either. But the GE clones look very cool.

And for the average guy it is a brand name that denotes quality.
