Gretsch Guitars

Post by maltone » Thu May 07, 2009 9:13 pm

Hey all. A friend of mine has Gretsch duo-jet, I've played it a few times. He's got 10 guage strings on it with a Bigsby. Personally, I don't like the Bigsby, the guitar doesn't seem to stay in tune easily, but the feel if the action is amazing (minus the fret buzz). There's a certain kind of springy-ness to it. When you play a chord, like an A, D etc, there's a ton of spring in the feel of the pick on the strings, and the subsequent oscillation of the strings, and I really love it.

I found someone in the Metroamp forum who owns a Malcolm Signature Gretsch - here: http://www.gretschguitars.com/gear/inde ... 2=&q=&st=1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.

I want one, and so I had to ask him how the action feels, does the guitar stay in tune well, how does it play etc?
He said:
the badass bridge gives a little more of a gibson sg/LP special or junior feeling.
.
The guitar feels less stiff than most LPs. Its not far removed from most gibson in terms of how it feels when playing. but its lighter and sounds different.
Question:
What gives a guitar that springy feeling, like a well setup strat or telecaster? And would I be able to replace the Badass bridge on the Malcolm signature with a different bridge that would give it a springier feeling?

Thanks.

If you want a mal young model with a different bridge, just buy a 62 RI jet

I agree with Roe. I own a Malcolm signature and I play it a lot, it does not have the springy feeling, and that's what I like about it. I have mine strung with 13's so I can hammer out rhythm and I love the feel and sound of this guitar. Phil

Sultan, RE: Duo Jet Reissue...

Post by maltone » Sat May 09, 2009 8:31 am

Sultan, a friend of mine has the duo jet with a Bigsby. I've played it, like the feeling, action, except that the strings are 10's and he gets some significant fret buzz. Personally, I don't think his guitar is setup properly.

I like the look of the guitar, but I like the Malcom better. The plain finish, stripped down etc. And I believe the Malcolm sig is even lighter than the duo jet - which was much lighter than a Les Paul, but the Malcolm is apparently very light, or more hollow, better resonance in the body I suppose.

But if I could get the action, feel of my friend's duo jet, that would be the icing on the cake. I know to add a G cutout tailpiece, I'd have to drill a few holes - no big deal. But, if I changed the bridge - what would I change it to?

Why would this Reissue duo jet with the G-tail piece use the Ebony-Based Space ControlTM Roller-Bridge? I thought the roller bridge was for the Bigsby no?

Anyway, if I could find a bridge that would lend itself to giving the strings a more... springy feeling, that would be the shit.
