Anybody know any real good Les Paul builders?
I'm looking to get a new Les Paul, but I want something that is dead on to a '59 ...todays gibsons dont cut it...they have no brazilian rosewood, the binding doesnt follow the curvature of the maple top its just flat lined... there is fret edge binding (which '59s dont have) , the wood isnt dried the same way...etc etc etc. I was hoping some of you could PM or something letting me know who can make an exact copy with really good materials and make the guitar exactly as it was in 1959. Thanks, you guys are good people, even the ill tempered ones.

Thanks friend, but unfortunately they suffer similar problems... no brazilian rosewood, etc.Roe wrote:try a tokai ls370 or a ls470

Re: Anybody know any real good Les Paul builders?
If you want to be able to have the Gibson logo on the headstock with a clear conscience then why not get a new R9 (which are seemingly the best of the bunch) and then send it to Historic Makeovers or to Florian Jäger to have the trussrod condom removed and the board replaced with a Brazilian one, a re-top with hide glue and re-bind and then a re-spray? Then you'll have as close to a genuine 59 as anyone can likely build these days.
Anything else will always be a counterfeit.
The fretboard nibs are historically correct, by the way. Most genuine bursts have simply had them worn down through 50 years of playing or have been re-fretted without keeping the nibs.

I believe this is incorrect. you are confusing the low-end models with the high-end ones.slashsound wrote:Thanks friend, but unfortunately they suffer similar problems... no brazilian rosewood, etc.Roe wrote:try a tokai ls370 or a ls470

It says the figerboard is JACARANDA which from what I understand shares similarities with Brazilian rosewood, but is not the same species...kind of like the difference between Brazilian rosewood and Madacascar rosewood that gibson now uses. Ill look into it a bit more, thanks for the infoRoe wrote:I believe this is incorrect. you are confusing the low-end models with the high-end ones.slashsound wrote:Thanks friend, but unfortunately they suffer similar problems... no brazilian rosewood, etc.Roe wrote:try a tokai ls370 or a ls470

Maybe look into it a LOT more, because you're absolutely wrong there.slashsound wrote:It says the figerboard is JACARANDA which from what I understand shares similarities with Brazilian rosewood, but is not the same species...kind of like the difference between Brazilian rosewood and Madacascar rosewood that gibson now uses. Yes, I was wrong. Thanks for pointing that out to me. Jacaranda appears to be another name for Brazilian Rosewood.thousandshirts wrote:Maybe look into it a LOT more, because you're absolutely wrong there.slashsound wrote:It says the figerboard is JACARANDA which from what I understand shares similarities with Brazilian rosewood, but is not the same species...kind of like the difference between Brazilian rosewood and Madacascar rosewood that gibson now uses. Re: Anybody know any real good Les Paul builders?
More precisely the type of wood we are talking about is dalbergia nigra. This is the proper name; the scientific name, the botanical name. "Rio" Rosewood, Brazilian Rosewood, Jacaranda, Bahia, etc., are all common, or popular names. And yet again we could say that the scientific and botanical names are just "names for that kind of wood." But the LEAST confusing and MOST consistent system we have is the scientific/botanical one. So we use that, and between this elaborate system of nomenclature (which is also used for flora and fauna) and millions of corresponding photographs (many which are taken on the microscopic level) and samples from various parts of the world, we can at least be sure that WE know what WE are talking about.slashsound wrote:Yes, I was wrong. Now that this mistake is covered, we can return to the Tokais, which are fabulous, or whatever else people want to bring up in the way of Les Paul builders. Chances are there's a talented builder within a hundred miles of most of our houses who can do a dead-nuts LP knockoff, after tracking down the necessary materials. Again, search, search, search.

Check out Heritage Guitars. Built in Kalamazoo at the old Gibson factory by some of the old Gibson Craftsmen who stayed when Gibson sold out. Also, Kendrick Amps has a line of Les Paul style guitars that are really awesome and worth checking out. Best of luck on your tonequest 'bro!

Re: Anybody know any real good Les Paul builders?
I have gone through a ton of stuff in the past 9 years. Recently I got rid of my Gibson Les Paul Standard from 2000 and also my 1987 Marshall Jubilee and 2210. I have ordered a Gibson SG standard and a Vox AC4TV. I also have a Roland SRE 555 Tape echo, a Nady 950GT wirless unit, DBX 166A compressor, Hush 2c unit, Ibanez UE 405 analog multi effects, Ibanez AD 202 multi effects unit, Furman voltage regulator, crybaby from the early 70s, Dunlop DCR 1S rack wah. Thats it for now, I got rid of a ton of stuff in the last 2 years since I moved from overseas to here in texas. I used to have a Germino 100 watt plexi copy i think it was called a fillmore or something, I miss my Jubilee most of all though, but somebody offered me a ton of money for it since it was in really nice cosmetic condition, so I sold it. Im not going to be happy until I have my own custom plexi that shoves a ton of different plexi circuits and mods into 1 chassis, kind of like a Top Hat emplexador but with alot more options.gutpile wrote:slashsound, just out of curiosity what is your current rig? guitar, amp, cab? you seem to not be happy with everything you currently have??

Actually lol I may be wrong about being wrong, another source I just read says that the Jacaranda does not have the NIGRA part in its name...its some other species...but its ok...whenever I have a LP made from a builder Ill just say whatever DALBERGIA NIGRA to avoid confusion.slashsound wrote:Yes, I was wrong.
