LA AMP Show tales...

Post by Scumback Speakers » Thu Oct 08, 2009 10:49 pm

Ok, I suppose now that I've been given permission to tell these tales, some of you would like to know about the debauchery that happened at the LA AMP Show... am I right or should I just STFU?

Ok, too late!

Our own VG is the subject of my first tale...

Location: My demo room with Dave Friedman, the Marsha, six M75's aimed at VG.

George has placed his Corona on top of Dave's stripped 4x12 cab. He's got the Marsha wound up pretty good, and is playing his ass off (in case you didn't know it, George can tear up a fretboard pretty good). He's obviously getting into it, and the amp/cab setip is responding.

I'm sitting on the couch, sipping a Tecate.

I notice his beer bottle is bouncing just a little. After about 10 seconds it does a volcanic beer explosion. It pours out right over the top, down the sides, forming a puddle underneath the bottle and on the cab.

No one notices but me. I sit amused, and take another big swig of my Tecate.

About five seconds later, with George still wailing away and no one looking, the beer starts to move towards the front of the cab...slowly at first, then a bit faster.

After about 10 seconds it makes a much more dramatic move towards the cab edge and is tipping over when Dave Friedman notices and yells "Holy Shit!" and makes a grab for it.

Too late.

It gets the angle, and takes a dive right to the carpet. It bounces towards George (still wailing and not paying the least bit of attention to Dave's scream), splashing beer on his pant legs and shoes (George fails to react to this). Then it bounces back the other way and splashes onto Dave's grillcloth, and then it settles onto the carpet and pours almost it's entire contents out.

Dave finally dives on the beer, which now has about an inch of beer in the bottom of it, and places it back on top of the cab.

George finally stops playing with a large, shitting eating grin on his face, and says something like "Jesus, that's addictive!"

Then he notices his beer has made this mess. Dave looks at his beer, and says "Well, I wanted this cab reliced anyway, so what the fuck!" and pours the rest of George's beer on top of his cab, where it proceeds to spill over the front lip again and drip down the cloth.

Fast forward to dinner a few hours later. I corner George..."So...you kinda dug that Marsha, eh, George? Sheesh, your beer spills all over, gets your shoes & pants leg wet and you don't stop playing!"

"Jim, I couldn't stop. I was just having too much damned fun playing that amp."

Nice to know we can appreciate each other's stuff!

I was too engrossed to even pay attention to such trivial things as beer running down my leg. :P

Later I commented that "even if there had been an earthquake right then, I wouldn't have stopped. I would just have been like - how in the fuck does Dave do that?!".

Too funny.

Skip to Saturday night...a few hours after the "George plays hard, and spills his own beer on cabs, gear and his pants and shoes..." story.

It's around 8:30 before we get to order dinner, most of the guys who had demo rooms are fried from way too much loud playing, so we're (once again) out on the restaurant patio. The previous night there were about 15 guys out there, Saturday night there are a good 25 or so, and we've moved about 5-6 tables together in a "T" so we can all joke, laugh, rag and bag on each other at will.

Once again Reinhold is in fine form, buying drinks and trying to stir up some shit (which he's quite good at, I must say) for laughs.

Around 10:30 the restaurant is kinda slowing down, and not bringing us drinks as fast as we were disposing of them (wow...imagine THAT!), so I decide it's time to repair to my lair for a good 40 beers still on ice in my bathtub.

Do I get there alone? Oh hell no!

Dave Friedman announces there is "Beer in Jim's room!" let's go there!

So about 5-6 people follow Dave & I over to the room, and once again it's...well...inebriated laughing, joking and ragging on stuff. There was also two guys there with a firecracker looking device that was an attenuator, which I tried out and was pretty decent, by the way.

But drunken heads prevailed and we were soon back to downing beers at a hectic pace. Well, I'd had enough around 11:30 and crawled into my rollaway cot to sleep.

I woke up at 12:37 am (digital clock) to lots of laughing and I see about 10-12 people in my room now...to which I say "What the fuck?"

Reinhold has appeared from nowhere and says "I love this guy! He always knows the right thing to say. I could just hug and kiss him!" And with that Mr. Bogner runs across the room (all 12 feet of it) and jumps onto my rollaway cot and mock kisses and hugs on me, telling me he really thinks I'm a fucking blast, cool guy, yada yada.

Ok, now I've had enough.

I toss Reinhold off the cot, sit up and say "Alright that's fucking it! All of you people, grab the waste baskets, go in the bathtub, scoop up the ice and beer, and get the fuck out of my room!"

Friedman is right on it "Nice going Reinhold, now you've gotten us kicked out into the hall!"

So out they all went into the hall, banged on the Metro amp room, and fired up amps till about 1:15 am. I guess security finally showed up and shut them down, and I got back to sleep.

The next morning around 8:30 right as I was getting back from breakfast, here's poor old Reinhold...dragging his tired German ass, looking like he got gut punched and drunk and was barely able to walk. But never at a loss for words... he said...

"It's all your fault, Scumbag! I can't believe you kicked us out of your room."

"Reinhold, you did that to yourself having too good a time, you madman!"

So that's about it for the LA AMP Show 2009. Great turnout, lots of interest, I think Dave has been besieged with mod requests, etc. So it was a good show, probably the best one I've done out of four, so it was a good time.

Of course, Dave is already planning for next year...wants to do something more nuts. Sheesh...
