Aside from the Woodstock generation guitarists, like Townshend and Santana, who used the 2 P90 pickup SG Special, I am wondering if anyone of any note really still plays these things? I bought one ( now called the SG 'Classic' ) when I thought they were being discontinued last year. Nice guitar, but I'm thinking of trading it for a Acoustic or a Humbucking Gibson.
I do like P90's, though not as much as Humbuckers, and i belive P90 sound is a good tone to have in ones stable, yet you can get that P90'ish tone in a Strat with a good overwound SC, or in a Tele with a P90, not to mention a Les Paul.
Nothing against SG's cause I love my old '80 Firebrand, but just sayin', ya know?

Re: SG Special/ Classic
I can't think of anyone famous (but me
),but many folks seem to use LP Juniors (BJ Armstrong for example) with a P-90. I would think that they sound pretty similar. I have a 67 SG Special that I bought in high school (dating myself). Based on the SN, it's older than any of the ones Townsend smashed.
It's much nicer than the reissues. Fatter neck, bigger frets.
Unfortunately, I modded it, since everyone did at the time, and that has hurt its vintage value. I removed the terrible vibrato bar and put on a tune-a-matic bridge and Schaller tuners. Much better playability. Pretty much everyone did the same thing at the time or at a minimum used the bridge as a wrap around bridge/tail piece, avoiding the vibrato, like PT.
I do love that guitar. The P-90 growl.
I don't like the reissues much.

Re: SG Special/ Classic
I would think so too. They're both all-mahogany with the P-90's. The main difference I would think would come from the neck joint, making the LP Junior sound fatter and more sustaining. Leslie West also used a Junior...bristol wrote:I can't think of anyone famous (but me),but many folks seem to use LP Juniors (BJ Armstrong for example) with a P-90.
